when we're killing ourselves? Bin Laden is probably laughing it up, wherever he is. This is getting ridiculous. Another week, another death through mechanical failure? When will this stop? Do our weaponry need updating? Can anyone explain these accidents.

Things like this happen during peace time also. Machinery will fail from time to time and things like this will happen.

don't worry, you'll be glad to know that at least 1000 afghans die for every american soldier.

I'm sure you're right, but these machines are supposed to be ready for anything. And their dropping like flies. Are these machines (and the soldiers in them) insured?

Military equip gets the roughest use because of its tasks. I'm sure if you could compare total flight hours/accidents between military and civilian aircraft that the military aircraft would be just as safe. You have to remember that not too many civilian aircraft do "nap of the earth" flying either...

One other question for the military experts here. Is it at all possible for those in helicopters to escape from a chopper that's going down? It seems as though most of those that have died have been in chopper crashes.

I might be wrong, but I think only the Soviets have a helo with ejection seats. All the rotors are blown off with exploding bolts and then their ejection seats give 'em a ride.

Maybe it was shot down but they figured "mechanical failure" was a better way to keep the morale of the American people high?

It's a possibility.
