It is latest by John Carmack.
He invented the FPS genre of games.
Every FPS made is just a variation on Doom.

A lot of us older ATers played Doom 1 & 2 extensively in our formative years. The 3d engine was certainly primitive by today's standards, but the only games which have come close to that level of enrapturement for me are EverQuest (before Sony ruined it ~2 years ago), Halflife, and Far Cry. It's similar to middle-aged people liking bad music (doo-wop and such) and elderly men wearing fedoras.

I've never really been *THAT* fond of any id game short of QII. Other than that I just see the id games as good engines for real gaming companies to tweak and publish stuff that looks good and plays good.

I see id as more of gaming architechs than artists.

Doom and Doom 2 were fun to play and fun to modify with new levels, sounds, and monsters. They were really popular, probably the first computer game to get such a widespread fan base, outside of solitare and such.

Doom 3 is kind of an historic release.
