From different articles ....

" ... to discuss demand destruction in gas prices, whether price hikes could happen in the fall and potential demand destruction within ... "

" ... and service workers face difficulties up-skilling. "

And do they get paid well? I can make up silly terms.

Demand destruction is an industry term and has been part of the commodities/investment lexicon for decades. Only reason you're hearing it now is because gas prices have been top headlines for the past few months. As far as up-skilling, yes, that's bullshit.

Demand destruction is a very real term and has been in use for ages.

Upskilling is garbage.

Upskill is "BS"? O'rly? Perhaps to someone who can't perform an elementary google search.

First known use of the word was in 1978, yo.

I don't really see the problem. Technical fields invent new words (or, rather, glue existing words together to form new terms) to be able to refer to concepts they need to frequently refer to, without having to use a long explanatory phrase repeatedly.

I suppose the ones that one could object to are the euphemistic ones that conceal the unpleasant reality of what they refer to - "downsizing" being a classic case.

It's in the dictionary so it's official English.

Unless you mean all languages are made up? Technically true since all words are just invented sounds, but that's a worthless "meta" discussion at best.

So if I hit myself in the head with a mallet is that now "downskilling" ??

:p

Just because a word is in the dictionary does not mean the first folks to use it that way shouldn't be embarrassed for having done so!
