I have a Thermaltake purepower 360W. It's surely not the quietest, but there is a world of difference between the generic I was using before and this one now. :)

I put an antec truepower 430W Ps in my dad's computer...he was unhappy with the noise his system generated mainly due to the previous PS.

I myself was amazed at how quiet the antec PS is...my dad leaves his case open (i.e. case door off) and the system still doesn't make a peep...loudest component is the HDD.

I also suggest the Antec Trupower. I don't think there is a more balanced and useful PSU out there, although the price is a little high. You get what you pay for.

I own a 330W Antec Trupower. I got it for Christmas. It's actually a tad quieter than my previous single fan PSU. Also, they are some of the highest quality PSUs you can buy. Enermax makes real good PSUs as well, they're just not as quiet.

Power factor correction(PFC) is absolutely pointless from user's perspective. European countries now have a legislation that requires new computer equipment to meet minimum power factor and not exceed a set value for harmonic distortion. The purpose of legislation is to reduce power quality problem as a whole power distribution system.

In European countries, computers are sold with a PFC power supply to simply comply with the legislation. Unless you feel good for doing a favor for the power company by reducing harmonic distortion, "PFC" is simply a marketing propaganda.

Dunno about the noise factor, but the Antec is definitely a better piece of equipment. Tt has a terrific marketing staff, they have to be, 'cause their stuff really isn't that good....

The need for psu's more powerful than 300-350W is greatly exaggerated, imho, and the likelihood of cheap 400w units lasting very long at that output level is even less... but they get over because even loaded systems seldom actually draw 200w.... Computing isn't necessarily very scientific at the hobbyist level, there have been lots of fads, and more to come, I'm sure....

The trupower antecs are supposedly very good, and very quiet, it's extremely unlikely that you'll need more than 380w, 330 would probably be more than enough. The 300w Zalmans and Seasonics are extremely quiet, almost silent- nice price on the zalmans at nexfan....

I have an Antec TruePower and its very quiet. I also have an Enermax Whispers and they are very quiet and are very good quality also. I would recommend you either those two. Just get the least expensive one at the wattage you want by either Antec or Enermax You can't go wrong with either.

Active pfc is a good thing in the long run for all of us. It cuts power consumption slightly by raising efficiency and makes it easier for the power company to regulate the line. Not that pc psu's make a heck of a lot of difference, but expect it to be required on more devices in the near future, theoretically reducing brownouts, etc, during periods of high demand...

PFC is one of those things that ideally every SMPS should have. It is only a matter of extra inital cost that you would not want it. However, as PFC uses less power it eventually pays for itself even if the other benefits like reduced EMI are not a concern. It is certainly better to pay more for a beneficial feature than silly things like extra fans, paint jobs and flashing lights.

You have no idea how right your statement regarding the Enermax not being that quiet it. My other system which is getting the new PS has one of the Enermax Screamer series PS in it. Off to Newegg to buy this sucker. Thanks guys/gals for your help :)

If you can, try not to limit yourself to those 2 choices. There are other more silent PSU's out there, including Zalman, Seasonic, ExoticPC SilenX, Nexus and Q-technology.
