Looking for a scanner that will scan photo, image and document well.
Any idea what kind of scanner is good for all those purposes?

Canon... I had a Canon 656U silver model
and now a Canon Multipass F20 and they both scan quite well (the 656 being a bit better)

Canon scanners are good, too.

My HP 3570c works very well, and it's priced nicely.

I have been happy with my canon. It was a 600X1200 optical. I just replaced it with an HP printer/scanner that is 1200X2400 optical to save space.

Bought one for a hundred bucks, used it sparingly, light went on the fritz and then come to find out they don't make replacement lamps for that model.

Can anyone recommend a cheap one for scanning in magazine articles for archiving that you can at least change the bulb in?

I've found the Epson Perfection models to be faster and offer more options than other brands. I've used them since the days of the large format Epson Perfection 636 or whatever it was called SCSI scanners. I've liked them since then.

I hate my HP. I think it's a 2100. Blacks look like absolute garbage on this scanner. I mean, downright horrible.

Another vote for the Canons. I have an HP3570C but I've heard these things die a lot. I have my older usb 1.1 canon handy when the hp dies. I only paid $30 for the HP though so I'm not complaining.

For flatbeds, I tend to intensely dislike HP Scanjets, and personally think that Epson Perfection scanners are the best in the sub-$1000 category.

On the other hand, I think Nikon film scanners are most desirable in the somewhat-affordable (thus excluding drum scanners and pseudo-drum scanners [e.g. Imacon]) category.
