Hey good advice... With sharp if you buy direct from their website you can get a refurbished laptop and then add a three year warrenty for cheaper than the original laptop, i.e. my laptop new cost 1500 I bought it refurb for 1100 and added a $300 3 year extended warrenty. The new one came with only a 1 year warrenty and cost the same 300 to extend the warrenty. Not sure if this works with other companies.

I'll give up that feeling of new when with the extra $300 I put towards my Chip-con cooling system to make my 1700XP go 2.6ghz:)

Since you asked about warranty programs, let me tell you about my experience with IBM.

I had an A21m, that I bought factory refurbished (so it had a 1 year warranty). After about 6 months, it would randomly shut down. At first it would only do it every few days, then it got more frequent, so after a month, I could only use it for an hour.

I called tech support and waited on hold for 20....seconds. It was 11pm, though, so I figured they weren't busy. They told me to flash the bios, and do several other things that I knew wouldn't fix it, but I humored them. Then they told me to call them back if it happened again, and gave me a ticket number.

It didn't happen again until middle of the next afternoon. I called tech support again, and expected to wait on hold for a while, since it now was middle of the day. I dialed the number, and immediately got a person. I gave her the ticket number, and she asked if I had done all the stuff they asked me to. I said I had, and so she asked where to ship a return box to. I gave my address. The very next morning, I got a package from airborn. It was a box to ship my laptop back in. It had prepaid airborn overnight stickers inside, so all I had to do was put the laptop in and put the stickers on, and call airborn to schedule a pickup. They picked it up that afternoon, and IBM received it the next morning. They replaced the power card (I forget the official term) and sent it back to me same day, airborn overnight. I received the laptop 41 hours after it had left my hands, and only 81 hours after I first called them.

I've read several times where people sent their dell laptop in for service, and got it back a week and a half later.

Needless to say, I just bought another IBM laptop, this time, I purchased a 4 year warranty.

reading and comprehension plus math..schools these days too busy being politically correct with too many administrators and few teachers :(.. the $300 was not buying the new vs. refurb in that the new is only 1 yr warranty ..add your 3yr extension for $300 makes $1800 for new vs. refurb with 3 yr warranty at $1400 ..

Very true, I stand corrected and I bow my head in shame to my loss of quick math skills.

I don't believe the 3 year warranty is standard. I've seen some T models with 1 year warranties. But I'm looking at IBM Canada... maybe it is a standard 3 year warranty in the US.

But IBM is definately my favourite.

I love powerbooks but right now can not afford one. Played with the new 17" and loved it but the price is way over what I can handle. Too bad, I loved the machine!!

That "But it's an Apple" comment got to me. I have always loved Macs, just too rich for my pocketbook but am typing this on my used 400 Mhz G3 that I got for $15 at a thrift store. Works fine for the Net on DSL and other work. Sure no games but I have other systems for that.

excuse me ?? what are you tryin to say over there ???

just so you know, he said and I quote "my laptop new cost 1500 I bought it refurb for 1100 and added a $300 3 year extended warrenty" what price difference do you see here ? warranty period on the new one was not mentioned and from what I see the difference is 100 in these quotes

plus if you buy a refurb you better get 3yr since its more risky, while brand new is less risky and a 1yr is ok

and in the end I was just trying to say that when you spend that much it just feels nice to have a new item, geez

I think IBM has gotten past the days of the "Stinkpad." But they are pricey if I am not mistaken. You can always find an awesome deal on a Dell.

Right... and I assume you like to carry that 12lb desktop oops I mean laptop w/ you everywhere?

There are alot of other choices besides Sager... thats why it took 40 some posts before someone mentioned them.
