Who makes the "best" laptops these days?

Gateway has pretty good prices on their FX laptops (usually the models through Best Buy). They don't seem to be the sturdiest things around, but for the price, they're great.

Am I the only one who thinks that Sony Vaio's are cheap, plastic, flimsy, brittle machines?

Here's my opinion:

1. Lenovo (Thinkpad)
2. Dell (Latitude E series)
3. HP (business laptops)

Sony and Apple don't make it on my list since price and reliability are part of the criteria. Go drop a MacBook or a Vaio off a table, I dare you. Hell, I can't tell you how many Macbooks I've seen here at my university that have cracked or warped chassis solely because of the weight of a textbook in a backpack!

I have dropped my macbook off of a table, and thrown it, and tossed it in the air only to have it land back down upside down. It has been flung forward from the front seat of my car into the front compartment when a stop sign came out of nowhere and i was doing 50mph. It has been sprayed with water right onto the screen and keyboard (the movable shower head started dancing around when i was cleaning my bathroom... turn around for 3 seconds and the darn thing acts like a maniac!), it has been used in sub zero temperatures as well as accidentally left awake in between 2 pillows for a couple of hour long car drive. Now, after more than 2 years of constant, everyday use, I have a flaky bluetooth module, a small crack in the side near one of the screw holes, a lot of scratches, and some chipped plastic from the stupidly strong magnetic latches. My friend's macbook pro has been through similar situations, except instead of a light shower, replace that with a full can of mountain dew falling into the keyboard. Twice. And his never experienced rapid negative acceleration + impact.

I agree with your assessment of Sony. They are overpriced for what you get, and are darned flimsy. But my macbook, and most macbooks that i have seen have been incredibly solid, even through crazy abuse. However, I am not that fond of the power adapter cable design on the macbooks. The magsafe is awesome, really handy in the dark since i can just move it close to the port and it will snap into place, but man the cable fraying issue it annoying!

I bought a gateway fx a couple months ago... 0 problems with it (and I use it for like 4 hours/day, minimum) and the price was unbeatable for the gaming specs.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.
