Who makes the best IDE hard drive?

I was thinking about getting an IBM GXP and a person at the computer store said that those were indeed good drives.....although..

you are not supposed to use them more than 13.5 hours a day

All I have ever owned have been maxtor and seagates. Looking to get a 40 gigger to replace my 6 gigger. Any recommendations?

i have 2 WD HDD's 1 27.2 gig and 1 30 gigger.

the 27.2 gig has been going strong for the past 3 years in a system running 24 hours a day non stop.
the 30 gig has been going strong for the past 2 years in a system running 24 hours a day non stop.

great drives.

that 13.5 hours a day thing... you can run it 24/7. they just said it has a life span of so many hours. and when they asked other hard drive companies what the life span in hours were they said rough the same amount as the ibm drive.

True, but probably no better than my IBM 60GXP.

Haven't had any experience with Maxtor or WDC but I've had top of the line IBMs and Seagates fail on me.

IBM's are the best. Definitely go with the 60 and 75 GXP series's

I'd put those in a mission critical server any day.

Why would anyone vote for IBM? Are some people still unaware of the massive failure rates of their drives? :confused:

Has anyone ever done a pseudo-scientific study with failure rates of drives? It seems like everything you hear is totally anecdotal as in: "I have drive X, and have never had a problem with it." and then someone else comes back with "I have had three of that same drive and they all caught fire after 3 days and nuked all my data."

I pretty much stick to Maxtor drives FWIW.

All drives fail. True that IBM had a bad run for a while but in the end I think the failure rates of all the "major" manufacturers is probably nearly the same. I've had more WD drives fail on me than any other brand. Other people have the same experience with Maxtor, Seagate, etc... Right now I'm using Seagate drives in my system and all the systems I build for people. Why? Quality seems to be excellent, they are incredibly quiet, and so far I have yet to have one fail on me.

You should have stated Maxtor/Quantum instead of leaving them as individual companies. :D

Quantum did not exactly go down the hill, just bought over by a bigger company. THe newer Maxtor drives are most likely to use the Quantum technology in them. :)

I have dual 40GB WD drives and the computer is on 24/7. I haven't had any problems. I love WD.

Maxtor! I hate WD with a passion... just had a 20GB WD drive die yesterday in one of my test boxes at work... damn thing was less than two months old! Never had a Maxtor go bad, and I've never seen a WD last out its warranty.
