I've been trying to find a seagate barracuda ata 100 7200 rpm 30+ GB hdd, and I can't find any for sale. So I am resorting to another company. Which one do you all recommend for a 30 or 40 GB ata 100 7200 rpm hdd: western digital or IBM?

This isn't a newsgroup. Only one post will do it. If it was a mistaken, that's fine (double posts are relatively common), but go back and edit out those other two and request their deletion.

To answer the question, I've had great luck with IBM, but my experience is far from extensive.

IBM if you have the money
Maxtor is just as good, if you don't want to pay for the 'name'

I personally would rather save my money. I'm with Maxtor all the way!

I have never had any problems with Maxtor. I have one, and I'm about to get another.

IBM makes THE best drives IMHO, and Maxtor make the "Best Bang" for the buck hard drives. IBM and Maxtor make the best drives around, but not forgetting other companies. But for the good performers it has to be IBM and Maxtor.

Hope this helped!

Albert.

Just have a look over here at the Leaderboard. on storage review. No bones about it. for 7200Rpm drives, it's the IBM 75Gxp followed (closely) by the Quantum Fireball Plus LM.

Maxtor comes in third.

Go for the IBM 75GXP. Its cheaper than what most people think compared to similar sized HD. I got 2 of the 45GB version at buy.com for $137 each + shipping. Time to RAID 0

I would highly recommend Maxtor. They make the best drives in my opinion. I have not seen one recent one fail.

I buy western digital exclusively, never had a problem with them at all.. and I believe they are basically IBM drives. Maxtors I do not care for.

I have owned both a 75GXP and a Maxtor. Both were 7200 rpm. I like the IBM cause it's quieter......not by an amazing amount, but enough to make me want to stick with IBM.

IBM
Quantum
Fujitsu
Western Digital
Maxtor

And I dont even HAVE a IBM drive.

The numbers I've seen say that all the brands are now equally reliable. Maxtors are probably the quietest, followed by IBMs and Fujitsus, with Quantums being the noisiest (I'm referring mostly to motor noise, not seek noise; latest Quantums may be quieter). Fujitsus probably draw the least power (coolest), something to consider for 7200 RPM, and Fujitsu and IBM, being the largest companies, are least likely to go bankrupt.

Maxtors and Quantums are highly recommended, IBM is alright, but stay away from WDs.
