Who makes the best flat bed scanner?

I notice on Amazon.com that HP doesn't get many good reviews for their flat bed scanners. Many people have a lot of problems. Is Canon one of the better manufactures of flat bed scanners?

hp use to to make good flatbed scanners, but that was a decade ago. from what i have seen, the canon small lide or whatever their branding name is work excellent. plus most of them run of the usb bus, so no more extra powerpacks. i picked one up a couple years ago refurbed for $50 and it is still working very well today. i think its optical resolutin is 300 or 600dpi, either way it is excellent for home use.

Canon 8400F or one of the Epson 24xx or higher model scanners.

The lower end Canon scanners are inferior, as are the current HP scanners.

The high end Epsons and Canons in that order. That is my experience. Been scanning since 1985 with a handheld Logitech. In the early 90s, a legal size SCSI HP scanner cost me over $900. Now I have an Epson 2450 Photo scanner - perfect for all my needs - Firewire connection.

which scanner has the quickest scan times? I'm not too concerned with scan quality as I'll just be scanning documents 90% of the time. I already have a cannon and it takes like 45 seconds for a scan. I would like something not too pircey that can scan quickly like photocopy machines.

For speed, you want the scanner that has the most on-board RAM - and that means looking at the more expensive ones.

What happend to HP's line of scanners? Weren't they at one time or another the top dogs? Now it seems all they produce is junk.
