Who makes the best DVD drive for ripping?

I have a stack of dvds and I would like to rip them into divx format so that I can play them on my machine without the dvd. Who makes the best dvd player for the computer for ripping?

They look great on my tv box, but id like to watch them on my comp as well.

I rip at around 8X with my 16X drive. The processor seems to be the bottleneck when I rip, because it has to decode the CSS and macrovision. If I just copy the vob files to my hard drive, it does go faster.

Besides, copying a DVD to my hard drive may take up to 25 minutes, but a good 2 pass DivX with my processor (1.4) will still take around 6-8 hours.

Dam!

I have never ripped, but my buddys do and i sort of have the idea and time it will take. the comp id do it on is a p3 700 w/512mb of ram.

Now about copying files to the hard drive.... You can just drag and drop the data files to the hard drive, then to rip the files with a ripping program? I thought you had to rip from the dvd it self. Humm...

Also... what is the best dvd drive out now for ripping? I used to know a few names but i have forgotten the names. there was a cheap $30-40 drive that i recall was the best for ripping.

TheLizardMan,
The Lite-On LTD-163 is currently the best overall drive, IMHO. It rips DVDs very well, and does DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) fast enough to feed even the newest 40X burners. It is ultra-quiet when watching DVDs too! Check these links for great reviews of the LTD-163:

http://www.storagereview.com (click on the Reviews link, and scroll down to the drive)

The best way to rip the DVDs is to use software that decrypts while it rips. The easiest and, IMHO, best software is SmartRipper 2.41; see http://www.doom9.org

You will also need software to encode the .vob files into Divx files, and http://www.divx.com offers different versions of the Divx 5.01 codec: a free version that lacks the quality-enhancing tools of the Divx Pro codec, which can be purchased for $30 or "sponsored" with ads (this intrusive version is not recommended). I say either reward their hard work and pay, or just get the free codec, which is less confusing anyway. The codec will not encode the vob files into Divx files, however; the great Xmpeg 4.5 will accomplish that task nicely. This file can be downloaded at http://www.doom9.org

Good luck with the Divx, but beware: the hobby can grow to an addiction... 🙂

The Lite-On LTD-163 has another vote here... super fast DAE and DVD ripping.. cheap and reliable too!

Also a vote for Smartripper to rip DVD's.. and I'll cast a vote for FlaskMPEG to turn it into diVx

I don't suppose it's available in black?

[EDIT]Scratch that, it IS in black although no Pricewatch retailers list it in black.[/EDIT]

Time to replace my LiteOn CDROM with a DVD.

ive always liked using claddvd.. makes it easy for me to convert to vcd... since it makes the .d2v and .wav files.. then all i do is use tmpgenc.. not bad quality either.. im sure i could probably make it better, but it's good enough to view on a big screen..

another vote for lite-on 16x that i got from dell.. great drive.
