What brands are considered the best?

And what specific features should I be looking for?

Not sure that it makes any difference. As long as it opens and closes and a key can open it, it's just styling that matters. Also if you have a certain brand already, get the same brand and they can make the keys match.

For common commercial locks, Medco.

There are better locks for specialty applications, but for general purpose stuff, Medco is about as good as they come.

Schlage is also pretty good.

Any of the Quickset locks (including Titan and some others) are pretty easy to pick & jimmy. When you are starting to learn lock-picking, they usually recommend starting out on something "easy" like a QuickSet (they're um, "inexpensive" too)

Good Luck

Scott

I have a schlage on my front door that a locksmith could not pick after 45 minutes.

i think shlage was decent. their locks tend to be ok from the ones i've put in. a while back during the lock bumping/picking thing it seems shlage was one of the few that passed that test. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lock_bumping

plus the screws and bolt liner/reinforce plate were thick and long compared to a cheap one i've tried in the past.

As good as your deadbolt can be, make sure to get strong hinges and doors too. That whole chain, link concept.

Another trick is to use long screws for the strike plates. Secure them to the frame instead of just the jamb.

jesus. this is why you really don't have to reply to a post if you have no idea.

What kind of deadbolt/budget you working with? They have doors that are much like a safe with bolts on all four sides.

For the most part though most people will enter through a window.

Yup, for the most part a dead bolt is just to keep honest people honest. If a dishonest person wants to get in your house they're getting in unless you go off the deep end with things to block every possible access point, like barred windows and such.

around my neighborhood from the reported robberies, they way people got in was simply throwing a large rock through a sliding glass door, or window, surprisingly no one heard anything.

You rarely hear anyone going though the front door any more, since well its exposed.

I would much rather first buy the Security tints for all the windows/sliding glass doors and then buy expensive locks
