Who makes the best backpacks?

I need to buy a backpack for college. It must have:

1. An oversized pocket big enough for my Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop and some padding.
2. Comfortable shoulder straps.
3. A price between $30 and $50

I looked at Eastpak and Jansport today, and they each had a backpack with a divided main pocket and a big front pocket. Then I talked to a friend of mine who said that Jansport backpacks aren't very durable, didn't know about Eastpak, and suggested I get an Arizona.

I don't really want to buy this online since I need to see it to make sure it's big enough. I have most major stores in my area, so be sure to mention a store that you think may sell the backpack. Thanks!

Edited to fix my error, which wasn't a grammar error but merely a holdover from my original subject line. I got a perfect score on SAT English, you know. ;)

Northface backpacks are made my JanSport, and unfortunatly, are lacking in quality compared to other products they make. You should check out C(K)line packs, they are pretty cool. I used to carry a Lowe Alpine around, and it was a nice pack.

yep I've had a TNF Yavapai for a few years and it's held up great--not only for school (before I graduaated :() but also for trips and stuff. It's got two zippered compartments, a front zippered pocket (I put my calculator, palm, etc. there), and two mesh water-bottle holders on either side. It's also got fully adjustable, padded straps and a waist strap too. VERY comfortable and durable.

Some people don't like wearing TNF because they think it's a fashion statement, but I could care less... it's a great backpack and was worth the $50 I paid for it.

How are you going to college when you can't even use basic high school grammar?

(sorry, i'm a little grumpy today, i'm just speaking my conscience...:D)

oh, and if you are not going to be buying the backpack online, then the best thing to do would be to go to a store like academy and look at what they have.

North Face is ill, their backpacks are huge though. They are supposed to be used for mountain climbing and sh*t. They also have a lifetime warranty.

The only North Face backpacks that might be farmed out to Jansport for production are their cheapest packs (sub-$40 line). But the rest of the line is made by them.

LowePro makes good packs comparable to North Face. Getting a pack from a real mountaineering company is rather chic.

On that note, I have an Ogio Scramble, which seems bombproof and is pretty darn big. If you want to look at a wide section, goto eBags. They have a 10% off backpacks sale this weekend and you can find coupons for them at the coupon sites.

much better :)

although "best" doesn't really describe much.. try "most durable", or "most versatile".. etc.

;):p:)

The one I hear about often is Jansport. Maybe because they are the most popular around here, but I don't know if it is the best

OUT!

Good grief, mention you're going to college and everyone's a English critic. Bite me! :D;)

BTW--I qualified "best" with my three conditions. I hate long subject lines.

Clive makes the best backpacks. LifeTime Warranty, are only $50 at the outlet store on www.ccs.com and provide great padding for the shoulder straps.

Eastpak and Jansport have lifetime warranties too. And yeah, Mountainsmith is kinda pricey. I'll check out the sporting goods stores later.

I know, I was just being picky ;)
Anyways, do you have a local outdoor sports specialty store or something like that you can go and browse through?
