Other than HP and IBM, who currently makes warrantied quad-proc Opteron systems?

Hit me up with some links, please. I'm trying to spec out a grandaddy build machine.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the links so far. Most of the IBM, HP, and Sun systems have chasses which are really overkill for our application. We don't need redundant power supplies or 1-u rack-mount cases.

I also noticed that you can actually put together a system like this yourself for about $12k using the Tyan 4-proc motherboard. But then of course the problem is that if the resulting system doesn't work, you're out $12k and have no one to blame but yourself...

Does anyone have experience building their own Quad-proc opteron systems?

Bump...

Any other system builders? If not, it looks like these systems basically run anywhere from $21k to $25k, which seems a bit high...

Most I've made is dual processor ones; including the server we have here at work. It's a Tyan motherboard. I can't think that a quad one would be much different than any other system. Sure, you're out money if parts fail. But unless you blow through another $12K, isn't it worth it? Just be careful in what you order. Get qualtiy stuff with good warranties. Just because it has 4 processors doesn't make it any harder to build than any other system.

Monarch Computer

Very good company and extremely good prices. They're pretty well known around here for having cheap CPUs and MOBO combos. I've got my server combo from them a few years ago and then I used them to upgrade those processors. Both times they had the cheapest prices.

Edit: 3 Year on-site warranty for $199

What will you be running on the Quad server ?? (apps & os)

If it were my own business that needed a quad server I'd try to save as much money as possible, but when I do servers for customers I use IBM & Dell..

If you stick to retail parts & top quality components w/ lifetime warranties(ie memory), you should be ok.

Jose

This machine will run Windows Server 2003 64-bit edition, and it will be used to perform builds of our entire OS; these builds are heavy on both CPU and Disk I/O usage. The builds are the only purpose of this machine.

We have essentially no "uptime" requirements. If a build fails due to an outage for some reason, it is not catastrophic: we can fix the broken component and restart the build. Redundancy to hardware failure isn't super-important. Speed and stability under load are very important.

I'd be tempted to do this myself, but after pricing the Monarch link that Quasmo posted above, I doubt I could do a better job for that price (it's nearly 50% cheaper than Sun or HP). And it would certainly cost the company more $$ in terms of paying me to do it... :)
