Hi;
I bought an AMD motherboard several years ago. The cover of the menu said "Main Board". I want to find if there is any update for the motherboard drivers. But who makes it?
Thanks.

Yep, FIC uses that term on all the packaging.
Looking at the CD cover now for a 503A.

PC CHIP?
Forget about it.
That thing from several years ago will cause you nothing but grief.
PC Chips were infamous for selling boards that had no cache, but fake chips instead!
They used every trick they could to put together garbage.

RobsTV, and I'm sure you're the reigning expert on PC-Chips. How about some USEFUL advice?

energyman, any other questions? Don't get FUDded, those boards usually run very well, and some of the older ones are surprisingly capable for their age - thanks to PC-Chips going the "cheap" route of using non-Intel chipsets that actually proved to last longer than everybody's darling.

For those new to PC's it IS useful. Some companies are plain and simple crooks, and they need to be pointed out. What part of this don't you understand?
PC Chips were infamous for selling boards that had no cache, but fake chips instead!
ALL the motherboard review sites posted info on this company, and the reasons why you should never, ever use a board from them. Headlines read" Why you should not buy a $79 motherboard". I ignored the advice, and built 6 systems for sale with these boards. 5 were back within 6 months, and all had odd motherboard related issues. While the 6th board reported problems, he never had time to return it, and just lived with it. Vender said this was normal and that failure rate was more than 80% so he dropped them.

Also, these boards use Intel knockoffs like 430vxPRO 430fxPRO 430hxPRO

From the webmaster for the Motherboard HomeWorld
<<" PCChips
The company with the worst reputation in the chipset community is PCChips. They were responsible for the "fake cache chip" fiasco that you can read all about here. They have been making chipsets for longer than I can remember, as I know that I've seen 386 motherboards with PCChips chipsets. They are related to Hsing Tech, who is a motherboard manufacturer. Recently, I've been seeing more and more VXPro and HXPro chipsets appearing on cheap Socket 7 motherboards, and I have reason to believe that PCChips is the manufacturer of the chips. See below. ">>

The $69 Motherboard

There is a ton of old info out there about the fake cache, but to sum it up, PC Chips company was the main source of the fake chip supplied motherboards. Here is an example that doesn't specifically mention PC Chip, but it is, as I bought some of these boards from the store listed in the article.
These thieves will stop at nothing

PC Chips admitted it did put the useless cache chips on its products

Yes, Motherboard home world has been bashing PC-Chips ever since. Noticed how old the information is? The headline alone - $79 mainboard - gives it away. The article's wild inaccuracy doesn't help it either.

Educate yourself: (1) PC-Chips _is_ Hsin-Tech. (2) Those "Intel knockoff chipsets" aren't what MHW claims. They're standard chipsets from the lights of ALi, SiS, and VIA - with a different sticker on. Reason: Many of the computer buying sheep wouldn't buy anything that doesn't at least sound like it's Intel. This is now in the process of changing, so the alias naming slowly disappears even at PC-Chips. Other makers did similar things (e.g. ASUS "Super-TX" boards, Soyo "ETEQ" chipsets) btw. We have the full collection of alias names online at www.wimsbios.com if you're interested.

Re the fake cache chip mainboards, right, they made them. Why? Because at least one of their OEM customers wanted them. Call that unethical, OK. Fraud? No, not at PC-Chips's side of the business - the OEM(s) who passed them on into the retail channel are to blame here.

That was back when the 486 business was at its best, btw. And they've certainly learnt their lesson regarding business ethics since.

To end that up, my statistics. I'm slowly approaching 100 computers built from (or bought with) PC-Chips/ECS mainboards, with failure or DOA rate no worse than we've had before with other makers. This mostly depends on from whom you buy.

Bought my first computer in 98'. It had a PC Chips mobo. My roommate has it now, and it still runs fine using the onboard video/sound. Seems okay to me at least. :)

Hi there;

I bought the mother around 97 - 98 time, it works fine so far.

RobsTV, I did have more questions. I am making a home network with 3 PCs. And, got a lot of issues duing last several weeks, hardware and software. Now this questios is about an old WD 400Meg disk. I used it as second disk while I was installing the Win2k for backup files. Then I unpluged it. Last night, I put it back to that PC as a slave disk, it caused BIOS not to see any hard disks. I put it as master, it only works if there is no other disks in the PC(this disk has win95 installed), I mean no disk in the slave, and no disks in the second IDE. I remember I had seen this problem several years ago, I remember that time what I did to fix the problem was used a different power plug (the one from PS). It didn't work this time. A bad disk? But it works, it boots and started win95. I was also trying to add a NIC card, so I can get the files out, but I failed to install the NIC card at win95, just too hard. Second question about this hard disk. After I booted this disk to win95, I couldn't see the files which I copied over from win2k to this disk. The directory is listed, but when I click on it, it wont display the files.
Thanks.
