I like Quintin Terrantino (I have no idea if I spelled that right), and George Lucas of course. :)

Stanley Kubruck has done some amazing stuff too. I've got his box set right here next to me. Full Metal Jacket RULES, and the Shining is one of, if not the best scary movies ever IMO.

You can't even spell the title of Saving Private Ryan right and you say it sucked. That was one of the best movies ever.

I do like Stanley Kubrick, though. :) Zeferelli and the Italian.... Nick Cage's uncle, whose name at the moment escapes me... he's good, too.

:)

ROFL back at you, Isla! Yeah, yeah, that Italian guy's not half-bad, huh? LOL! Although I'm never gonna forgive him for the horrible years of bad Marlon Brando imitations that followed "The Godfather" movies.....BLECH!!!!!!!

Edit: and for sheer bravado and perseverance in the face of sanity, John Waters!!

Coppola is good. :)

John Woo is good as well, but Tsui Hark makes the best damn karate flicks ever. Too bad his US movies were craptacular.

Kurosawa, David Lynch, Scorcese too are favorites.

I believe the guy who did Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet was David Lynch. He also did the Lost Highway. Stanley Kubrick is one of my favorites too. A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining. What a great resume. I'm not too familiar with James Cameron, but I'm getting tired of Spielberg.

XL, that is the director that is head and sholders above the rest. Personaly i think that Steven Spielberg has the most predictable style. I like some of his movies but he isn't a good director IMHO.

Sergio Leone, all the films he made as director were perfect -
'A Fistful of Dollars',
'A few Dollars More',
'The Good the Bad & the Ugly',
'Once apon a time in the west', (which many beleive is the best western of all time)
& finally his De Niro gangster epic 'Once apon a time in America' (The International English release, that is, the American cut was/is atrocious)
Mind you he produced & acted in some pretty trashy films, But those 5 films he Directed are amongst the best films of all time.

Orsen Wells
Tarrantino
Coppola
Kubrick
Lynch
Scorcese
Sergie Eizenstein
Leni Riefenstahl
(she directed 'Triumph of the Will'the most notorious documentary of all time & also the greatest propaganda film of all time to, all that footage you see in war documentaries showing Nazis marching about in Nuremburg is from her film 'Triump of the Will')
Fellini (of 'La Dolche Vita' fame)
George Miller (of 'Mad Max' fame)
Speilburg (for 'Schindlers List', I wouldn't call any of his other films truelly great)
Peter Greenway (for such stylish biting masterpeices of 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover', one has to be a genius to make film that is both as beautiful & as disgusting as this one)
Mike Leigh

That'd do for now.

BTW, 'Saving Private Ryan' was/is crap, as Specialist said the story line is crap, plus its not even realistic (a film doesnt have to be realistic to be great, but many people praised 'SPR' for its realism) - Mustangs weren't even ever used for ground attack in Normandy (except for the A36 ground attack version, which was only used in the Nth African & Italian campaigns, Mustangs were only used for bomber Escort duty in Europe, till the last days of the war), It was/were RAF Typhoons/Tornados that provided virtually all the close air support over Normandy.

DABANSHEE listed most of my picks, but I can't believe no one has mentioned Hitchcock yet.

BTW, AMC is running his movies on Sundays at 8PM.

saving private ryan (imo) shouldnt be appreciated for its 'original' storyline, so much as the epic scope of the actual movie. when i first saw the opening sequence, i was amazed we actually took the beach. when i saw "10,000 people died in this battle, etc" in my textbook, i never really grasped all the horrors of war, and never truly will unless i myself am in combat. this movie gives the masses a very good glimpse (i think) of the realities of combat, the gore, the emotional trauma, the cruelty, etc. i respect it for the great lengths that steven (or his production assistant anyways) went to make this film realistic and epic in scope.
this is not a movie that won oscars for it's story ;)

my favorite director is david fincher (seven, the game, fight club)

close second being...myself
buwahahahah :D
