Mark Levinson and Krell are good, but there are a lot of other good manufacturers out there and some great used stuff to be found. I had a couple of large Krell monoblocks driving my Apogee Divas for a while, but it really wasn't as great a combination as I'd expected. I ended up "downsizing" to a Rowland Model 2, in part because the Krells were such space-heaters.

In the theater, I've got Aragon amps, and those are quite good amps for someone on a more modest budget.

Every year, Stereophile Magazine puts out a guide that summarizes their reviews on all the equipment they liked that's currently available. That's a good reference to start with if you're looking to upgrade your stereo.

Um, Hi-Fi means high fidelity.

High fidelity immeditately rules out sony, technics, pionerr, jvc, denon, yamaha, et all.

But for general entry level mass market stuff - denon, harmon kardon, and (gasp) sony ES gear is decent.

Yamaha, Pioneer and Denon actually make good receivers

Sony used to make a decent line of stuff. It was made in Japan rather than Thailand or where-ever. Forget the model number.

Most of the consumer lines have a high end line and separates (tuner, preamp-amp).

Then there is the really high end stuff like Krell. Even Onkyo makes mono blocks.

McIntosh. As long as the price doesn't scare you. There are other high end brands, and along with McIntosh, they are far superior to what I've seen mentioned here so far.
Not that Yamaha, Onkyo and Denon suck by any means, just that they are nowhere near "high end" home audio.

True, but the topic of this thread was hi-fi. Receivers don't even enter the picture and are never used in a hi-fi setup.
