Who makes and what is the most reliable non foreign made vehicle?

Basically what is the best all around vehicle you can get that is not foreign made. Needs to be reliable, decent on gas mileage, stuff liek that, I'm sure you know what I am talking about

Well, technically the Honda Accord and Civic are US made (Marysville, Ohio), but I think you are looking for something from one of the Big Three, in which case I would recommend the Ford Focus. I've heard great things about them.

Your prolly right, but both my parents believe in buying american, and I do to, but dang compared to the Japanese our cars suck. But they will prolly be paying for or at least taking out the loan for me so I can buy my next car, so I will prolly have to buy american.

I was mainly talking about the big 3, but yet my mom said that she just wanted to buy american so it would give other americans jobs. So if they are made in the US then it is prolly enough to convince her, my dad on the other hand would be a tougher sell. So I will keep that in mind. Thanks

What's your budget?

Contrary to popular perception, current domestic vehicles are not "suck". I'm sure I'll be outcasted for that, but who cares?

In my opinion Saturns rock. When you factor in price they have one of the best track records. They may not be the most stylish, but they are very practical.

I agree with that too

Uhhh, what are you looking for? Compact sedan? Full size truck? Mid Size SUV?

It's tough to beat a full size Chevy Truck or Ford F-150 for reliability.

As for cars...hmmm....something with the GM 3800 is pretty solid, like a Pontiac Gran Prix GT. The Chevy(Geo) Prizm is just a rebadged Corolla, so that's pretty solid too.

The ZX2 from Ford is a rebadged Mazda that has pretty good reliability ratings as well.

The foci...hmmm....well....I think the judgement is still out on them. The focus "problems" thread over at Edmunds is HUGE and has litterly thousands of people talking about problems with their focus's.

i don't believe it really matters what you buy in the long run (macroeconomics)...

but i'm still interested in hearing... i would guess a ford? they're always talking about how their trucks are built to last...

If you can wait till the end of the summer Saturn is coming out with their Nissan Altima clone called the Ion. 😛
The S series has been comparable to the honda civic and cars in that class. Though with domestics the best value is a used car. You can get a 2001 Saturn for about 2/3rds the cost of a new 2002. Even with an extended warranty a used domestic is several thousand dollars cheaper than a new one.

My wife's had a focus (sedan) for a year and a half with no problems. Great little car that handles very well.

How about the Chevrolet Prizm which is part of "the big 3", only because underneath it's really a Toyota Corolla (OMG the Japanese are invading us, RUN!) manufactured in California.

Ask your parents this, guess where the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima are manufactured?

DUN DUN DUN the shocking answer!

<< nissan >>

dammit Skoorb! He said domestic! I'd recommend an Oldsmobile Alero..heard great things about them..or a Contour SVT (if you can find one)...or even a GrandPRix GTP..

i've had my Olds Intrigue for 3.5 yrs now. NO PROBLEMS.

If you can find a model you like i think most of the GM makes are pretty good. Buick in particular.

Maximum budget is 5000.00, but I would like to look for something closer to the 3000.00-4000.00 range. What exactly doesn't really matter, truck, car, SUV, sedan, coupe, doesn't make a huge differance. I do have a 7 month old, so something that is easy to put a carseat in the back seat would be nice, but I aldreay have another 4 door car, so it's not a necessity. Actually I would prefer a more sporty coupe or something, but my girlfriend and I haven't yet decided who gets to use this car more. If I do then anything is fine, if she does then it will need to be a 4 door sedan or something like that. So pretty much I am undecided in that category yet

Since a lot of foriegn car companies make their cars here and American companies either rebadge them or make a lot of their cars in other countries I will just go ahead and say you should get what you like as long as it is a VW.

<< Ishe just wanted to buy american so it would give other americans jobs. >>

Too bad buying American cars only gives Mexicans jobs 😀

I'm pretty well anti-Ford. The Focus? Nice little car. Lots of recalls.
Oh and Disposable Brake Rotors that will cost you $400 to replace every 30k miles or so. I guess I've had so many bad experiences with Ford.

My dad's Oldsmobiles and Buicks have generally been quite reliable. He's generally a GM fan but occasionally lets a Ford slip through the cracks. In Ford's defense his '99 Escort has given him zero problems.

I always like Chrysler cars, but sometimes they have some issues, too.

For 4000 or 5000, look at a 98 or so nicely maintained Ford Escort. Good on milage, uber reliable, and cheap to fix if something does go wrong.

Nothing flashy, but in your situation, you are looking for value.

You already know the answer to this question.

If you look hard enough you could buy two 95 or 96 Dodge Neon sedan's for around $5,000.00 total

I've seen some sell for $2,000 - $2,500 if you know where to look and how to bargain.

well then rossman, thanks for that piece of info, can you tell me one more thing. Since those cars are being made in the USA, are they still more reliable then similar american(Ford, Chevy and what not) cars . Cause I have a friend that told me it would be better to spend my 4000.00 on a slightly older civic or something as opposed to getting a slightly newer, neon or focus or something, due to foreign cars being built like tanks as he put it. Is this still true are they built like tanks, if so are american cars just as good now, or are they still using Japanese parts and technology in the foreign owned US made cars?

what question do I already know the answer to rossman, I wasn't asking a question in that quote you posted. I know I already have the post about the neons, but it was getting kinda long, and this is differant I actually want to know what other cars to look for. Thanks
