I think he wants the control at the stereo system and not on the PC. With the AE-i you still have to be sitting at your PC to control it.
I'd say pic up a hackable net-device like the Compaq IA-1 and use that. 8.4" TFT, diskless, Linux-capable. Would make an awesome player.

It's a network appliance player that also comes with cheesy little speakers, but you can plug it into your stereo or any powered speakers.
Netgear, Apple, etc. have similar boxen for $100 - 300. Or get a $50-100 junk PC out of the FS/T forum and make your own.

There are approximately a bazillion digital audio bridges out there, most from popular SOHO networking manufacturers (Linksys, DLink, Netgear). Personally, aside from an MCE2k5 box, I like the Roku SoundBridge.
