South of Dayton. How bad does it suck?

Might move to the Waynesville/Corwin/Centerville/Springboro area. Kettering and Bellbrook are also options but getting kind of close to Dayton.

Going to miss California weather.

I know the weather in Ohio is similar to my weather here in London. That is a huge change from Cali.

Winter sucks here. And the summers are hot and humid.

I used to live about half-way between Cincinnati and Dayton. It's stereotypical suburbia - safe and extremely bland. The weather is pretty nice during the summer and cold in the winter. It's a very neutral, unexciting place. I wouldn't move there unless I had family in the area or it was the only place I could go.

I'm from that area. Middletown has the best* heroin in all of southeast Ohio. ;)

Seriously, it's going to be a big social / weather shock moving from CA to that area of Ohio. There still are some nice areas to live outside of Dayton, but the actually city of Dayton is a little rough (just like about any larger city anymore regardless of the state). I actually sold my grandmother's house in Carlisle, OH around a year ago, and they are building quite a bit of new housing and businesses, so it's slowly replacing some of the old run-down houses and businesses that have been closed for at least a decade now. My brother lives in in Dayton, so when I go up there we take the kids to the Dayton Mall and to the Wright Patterson Air Force museum (which has an array of full-size displays of ICBM nuclear missiles since they created), and it is mind-blowing to see their size in person.

I still like going back every few years to see some old friends, and eat some food I can't get in the south (Gold Star Chili, Skyline Chili, Donatos pizza, UDF (United Dairy Farmers) milkshakes, Superman ice cream), and reload on some Ohio State gear. Over the last 6 years or so, I was going back there 2-3 times a year for deaths in the family / handling estates, etc.

*Heroin use is truly bad in that area. There were several people from my school that died from overdoses (including a girl I casually dated way back in the day).

We have 3 kids and 6 grandkids there. One of the granddaughters lives in Middletown.

I've been back there a 1/2 dozen times. I like a slower pace and the rolling, green hills. I wouldn't mind a basement to set up a true home theater room.

I don't like heat or humidity but I'll be retired so I can go inside. Or so I tell myself. We may keep our place here and rent there for a year to test drive it. But the wife really wants to be there with the family.

just saying the golf season is shorter there. I would definitely move to where all my grandkids are.

No state income tax?
Ohio has state income tax and they're aggressive about collecting it. When I moved there, they sent me a bill assuming that I lived there the year before, assuming that my income for that year was somehow 20% more than my income the next year, charging me thousands of dollars in penalties, and threatening me.

It's so boring. Especially that area - you aren't even near a big city. Gotta love watching sports because there isn't much else to do.

While I didn't live there, I found myself quite fond of the general area around Mason. Relatively close to Dayton and easy enough access to downtown Cinci and anything inner-beltway. I spent a lot of time down there for the Reserves, loved the area. Partly because I'm from flat NW Ohio, and the topography of SW Ohio is gorgeous enough on its own to me, all throughout the year but especially summer and fall. It of course pales in comparison to living near mountains but whatever, I enjoyed that aspect. ;)

Plenty of food options, there are various activities, and an major amusement park (Kings Island).

It's not a world class urban metropolis but it's not a bad little area. There is certainly a lot to offer in the region.

I find it funny that a lot of us spent time in that area and that we came away with generally different takes on it.

That's to be expected. We all had something different in our past experiences that shaped expectations, so what you get out of a region is going to be personalized.

Olds, make the kids move. You're going to hate it.

You could come to S.C. Basements are rare though. You can always buy a cargo container. :)

My daughter lives in a small town in central Ohio. The weather is decent, and it is actually a very nice state geographically. Culturally though, it does tend toward redneckism, especially in the southern part of the state. Surprisingly for a rural area, the opioid crisis has reached epidemic levels, and there is a *lot* of violent crime. Not a place I would really want to move to, but if I had a good reason to go there (such as a job) I would not have serious reservations about it.

You can't really fight the family reason - it's a GOOD one. I grew up in Ohio and I liked having the seasons- a nice cold winter with snow, a nice hot summer for swimming. The humidity will take some adjustment - but if you are an indoor person, no sweat (pun intended). And you are pretty much guaranteed to have a basement. The down side? I am hesitant to comment on drugs and crime since that is very dependent on where you are. I will say that snow means salt trucks. The salt mixture in the road will stick to the lower part of your vehicle. You will want to get this off before it causes rust. Although cars deter rust much better than they used to, it's still worth being mindful of.

from what I'm learning here is that southern Ohio is a great place to score some sketchy smack.

That's basically anywhere in the midwest from what I gather. But rural/small towns in Ohio have been practically ruined by it. That and urban inner cities, but that's more like "flavor of the decade" as opposed to significantly threatening the entire community.
