Famous Quebec singer Robert Charlebois even wrote about this in his song Demain L'Hiver:

"Je vous laisse les enfants mangés par la souffleuse à 4 heures dans un fort trop secret"

Here's another mention in a novella.

FVCK THAT! I lived in the snow most of my life, and having been in Kahleeforneeya for almost 20 years, I don't miss it a bit! We drove the 2 hours up the hill (10 years ago) on Christmas, because my wife missed snow on Christmas...we weren't there an hour, and she was ready to go home..."nah, I said", we're here, we're gonna make a day out of it." and we did I filled the back of my pick-up with snow, tarped it, and hauled it home, and we made a snowman the next day...in more comfortable 45-50 degree weather. It lasted 2-3 days...but it was still fun. HAVEN'T made the drive since then, and have NO plans to, although last May, we went to Yosemite, and saw some still on the ground above 6000 feet.:

It's not common but unfortunately it still happens from time to time. Last I remember hearing about was a few years ago.
