Who lives around the metro Detroit area?

I used to live in Binghamton, NY and there were a few ATOTers in the area. Surely in the metro Detroit area there is at least a few.

I live in Northville. It's gangster here.

So what's cool to do in the area?

And this is kind of a long shot, but anyone into guns here? Looking for an outdoor gun range. I went to Island Lake range in Brighton, MI, and it was pretty weak. Max of 6 round in your mags, 1 shot every 3 rounds, poor hours, too much people, you get it... Plus they want like $200 a year for a membership.

I moved from NY where the gun laws are absurd, to MI decent laws but I can't find a nice mellow gun range. I thought being on the outskirts not far from rural areas I could find a nice mellow range, but nothing yet.

find an empty block of abandoned houses. police response time is an hour in some places and they will probably just leave if they hear gunshots.

Hah yeah right... why am I concerned about a shooting range when I could just go knock out some windows from an abandoned building. Nothing beats targets with instant feedback. 🙂

Sorry, don't know about any outdoor ranges. I like Double Action in Madison Heights, you could always call them and they'll probably be able to point you in the right direction.

There are 3 outdoor gun ranges within 5 miles of my house, and probably within 10 miles of yours. All are located in Commerce Twp within a mile of each other, and all are member clubs:

1: Birmingham Gun Club 8701 Richardson Road, Commerce Twp, MI (248) 363-9191
2: Multi-Lakes Conservation Association. 3860 Newton Road - Commerce, MI 48382 www.multilakes.com.
3: Detroit Gun Club. 2775 E Oakley Park Rd Commerce Township, MI 48390 (248) 669-4167

If it is one thing that Northville isn't, it is ghetto. LOLs

LOL yeah I was kidding about that. Northville is about as hard as soft serve. Thanks for the info though. Commerce is doable.

The government will soon purchase most of the $100 homes in Detroit and use the area to test new military weapons.

You know.. I do shoot quite often, and outside to boot. I've never been to a 'range' though. We have quite a large, sparsely populated area just to the North 😛

We should have a Michigan meetup.

I should add though, that my parents own a bunch of said land. No laws were broken that I know of.

This is where I used to go.

There was also an outdoor range in Rochester Hills but that is a good distance from you. I live just outside of Detroit now.

I lived there for 10 years from 1990-2000 in the north suburbs - Mt. Clemens, Farmington Hills, Royal Oak.

Unfortunately, you'll find all of the DNR operated ranges in the area (Bald Mountain, Pontiac Lake, etc.) will be much the same as you describe, although Pontiac Lake is less expensive. You'll need to join a private gun club or just head up North to go Rambo. Deer season opens on Nov. 15th, so it's only going to get more crowded for the next several weeks.

I'm not far from you, but unfortunately I cannot offer any advice on gun ranges. There's definitely a lot to do around here though. Other than the freezing winters, I absolutely love living here.

Yeah I need to find a private club that is not well known, but I guess that's the problem.

So is it legal to just go target shoot on public land? Like I know out west in Idaho, Wyoming, etc they have all the BLM land open to shooting, hiking, ATVs, etc. In the state or national parks of course you can't, but I haven't read exactly the laws on other state land. But I know it's not BLM land here in MI so it doesn't fall under those rules where I know it's legal to target shoot on.

If that's the case, for about the price of a membership I could get two nice steel plate targets and make a target holder for paper and set them up against a big hill.

Or I need to make friends with someone like ussfletcher and use their land. 🙂

I grew up in Northville and live in Novi currently. Love it here, but couldn't tell you anything about gun ranges.

No target shooting is allowed on parks or recreation area in Michigan unless you are in one of the shooting ranges at Island Lake, Bald Mountain, Ortonville, and Pontiac Lake.

The Island Lake shooting range has had a contentious history in the past decade or so since it was expanded. There have been noise complaints from the condo owners east of the range. The rangers are particularly observant of excess noise.

There are lots of private shooting ranges and clubs in the area. Some would love to have new members.
