Wine.woot.com is having a sale on a nice sample pack from Sakeone.com, a sake brewery here in America that puts out some pretty tasty sake in my opinion (and the price is nice since it's not imported).

So since I have sake on the brain, I figured I would see what the people browsing Off Topic thought about sake.

So, do you enjoy it?

tried it both warm and cold and didn't like it either time.

my BF kept trying to push it on me and I'm like, "nothing that comes from the land that invented tentacle porn could possibly hold redeeming value."

Sake it to me baby, yeah!

Actually I haven't tried it, and after reading the first few comments I probably won't bother. :p

It's not for everyone, you love it or you hate it.

However, hot sake is never really a good way to go as it is very cheap sake that is heated to hide the poor quality, I only order it if it's the only thing on the menu. If you feel like trying sake, I would say find a friend that knows what he's doing or you will have a VERY bad first experience as far as taste goes.

I tried some a long while back and didn't care for it much, but it was a cheaper bottle. One of my buddies told me that cheap sake is usually really bad and based on that I never had much desire to spend money on something that I may find horrible.

If anybody has any reccomendations I may be willing to give it another try.

I think it's delicious, though it depends. I prefer a nigori sake, but it turns some people off. Tazai makes Snow Maiden which is pretty good and readily available.

I'd recommend just going to an Asian market if you can. Around here, Super H would be the place to go. They have not just sake, but a lot of different "wines" from other areas like Korea. These are also delicious and tend to be something in between wine and sake with a grape/rice alcohol.

Sakeone will be your best bet, they are very good for the money and most larger stores have some in stock if you look hard enough. If you really want to start out easy I would say try something from the Moonstone line, it is sake infused with fruit flavor, it will get you used to the idea of sake but it's VERY sweet compared to normal sake.

You may want to try this sample pack from sakeone, it has a good mix of sweet and dry sake and all for $18!

Another good sake that I've found is easy on first time sake drinkers is Wandering Poet, slightly sweet, dry yet smooth.

Thanks, I may look into those!

Unfortunately I live in Pennsylvania which probably has the nations most screwed up liquor laws - and I lived in Texas for 25+ years and those Blue Laws are way more liberal than Pennsylvania. So all of the liquor stores are state owned and the last time I looked for sake here it was literally a couple of different bottles and that was it. And, naturally, alcohol can not be shipped into Pennsylvania - hell it is technically illegal to bring it in out of state, e.g. buy a six pack in Ohio and drive across the state line (technically speaking).

Here is something for you to try next time you have a bit of extra cash and feel like experimenting.

Buy a bottle of your favorite Soju and Pomegranate wine (I've heard raspberry or Asian grape wine works well also) mix the two bottles in a pitcher and pour them out into shots and enjoy. It tastes kinda like Kool-aid but with a slightly bitter taste that kicks on the way down and you will WANT to hate it, but you can't!

I drank some but didn't like it. I just dont like the taste of alcohol at all really. If I'm paying for something to drink I have many other preferences to that.

Sake is good as long as I have something to either eat it with, like sushi, or a beer to chase it with. A buddy of mine just ordered sake from a club\resteraunt and we passed it around without something to follow it and I don't know why but the taste just lingered until it started to make me sick to my stomach. Gives me the burps!

Sake is something I can happily drink a lot of without any trouble.

Unfortunately the ones I like are about $40 per bottle. :(
