who likes macs?

I work at a doctor's office and we have Macs and a few PCs (There was never a PC until I started working there). The Macs are used by the people in the office are for typing up letters and working with FileMaker Pro. For what they do, a Mac is all they need. The doctors I work for do what the office people do plus some video editing, so a mac works for them too. For everything that goes on in the office, I find that the Mac suits everyone just fine.

I'm not a Mac zealot (I don't even own one at my house), but for basic office applications and graphic editing I find the Mac is really good for them. I wouldn't mind having a PC and a Mac at my house (I would really like an Ibook), but I choose to only have a PC because of the cost and the fact I can customize it.

well I don't know much about macs but don't they run on inferior processors (speedwise) compare to PCs? My dad told me they ran on SCSI that's why everything was expensive for a mac.

Comparing a PC with a Mac is like apples and oranges (no pun intended). A PC runs off of the x86 instructions while the Mac runs of something different (can't quite remember the name.). The Mac processor made by Mortola is a lot more efficient than a PC processor in terms of power use and processing. With its short pipe line, it is able to process more information than PC is when they are both at equal clockspeed. The problem is that the G4 processor only has something like a 6 stage pipeline(I think that's about right), so it can't reach really high clockspeeds compared to the Pentium 4 (which has a 20-stage pipeline).

As far as SCSI being in the Mac; in the early days, they did use SCSI, but have moved to IDE drives now.

No, its more like comparing a 1ghz Celeron to a 1ghz Athlon XP. G4 processors are RISC processors, which are inherently more inherently efficient than Intel processors which are CISC processors.

The FIRST computer I ever used was an Apple IIe in elementary skool.......the first computer I ever owned was a Peforma 550CD (2xcdrom, 4mb ram, 512k video, 160mb hd, 68030 33mhz cpu)......my 2nd comp was a Peforma 6400/200 (big jump for me)...........I am still a huge mac fanatic...... it's just that I have one prob........no $$$$$$$$$$$..........mac's are lexury comps........$1599 for an 800mhz comp with no monitor and only 256mb ram?? I can build cutting edge pc for that price.😀

- Has AGP and PCI expansion slots (Video, Sound, Modem, etc....)...
- Has extra memory slots and removable memory.....
- Has USB and/or Firewire external connections.....
- Can have SCSI external connections.....
- Can use different monitors (BTW Apples Cinema displayes kick everything)

- Macs used to be all SCSI but now the low end models are IDE and have been for a long time.

I have to congradulate the few people in this thread that actually have some Mac experience to back up their comments however the rest of you that are spewing out gustapo BS that you heard from your friends and dady's that "know alot about computers" please come back and try to have this duscussion once you have used a Mac for all the gaming, browsing, emailing, day-to-day use, programming, graphic design etc that you've used a Wintel (PC 😛 ) box for...... Until then you may as well start slamming Sun/Solaris boxes and Linux boxes or whatever else you have NFC about .....

Not too fond of Macs. Even their most powerful dual 1Ghz PowerMac is beaten by dual 1.2Ghz Athlon system at nearly every Photoshop task. I do think Apple produces some of the best looking LCD's out there though...

From a price/performance point of view, Macs ARE expensive. To me that is a very reasonable complaint. I'm looking for VALUE here and I feel that is the Mac's only weakness. If they can can convince the public or otherwise come up with a feature that gives it more value, I'm sure it would be more successful. And don't BS me yourself as if youre the only person who uses Macs and can therefore 'slam' people who have a complaint against it. You are just as bad as other hardware zealots out there.

I was being completely serious ... perhaps I shouldn't have worded it the way I did. I do agree that pricing is a valid arguement against Macs.

Well although I'm not sure if I'm BSing myself or you ... my point was simple people shouldn't try to slam things they don't have comparable experience with. ie: If you don't have the same amount of experience with Linux as your do with Windows then don't try to slam Linux, if you don't have equal experience with Macs and Wintel boxes then don't go slamming Macs, until you've used each equally then you are in an extremely weak position for slamming something. Further when was I zealous about anything? I simply pointed out some flaws in some of the arguements people were trying to put forth against Macs in their uneducated/unknowing repetition of information they've heard elsewhere. I agree whole heartedly that there are valid arguements against Macs and reasons for not buying them, however I'm still waiting for them to come up from someone who actually knows what they're talking about and isn't repeating popular opinion etc, etc.....

can you choose your own motherboard from a list of hundreds of different kinds? how about dozens of video cards, dozens of soundcards, hundreds of monitors, hundreds if not thousands of cases, hundreds of cd/dvd drives, etc. etc. there is some choices with macs, but you cant build your own customized rig to the extent that you can with a pc.

Yes, you can choose from dozens of video cards, dozens of soundcards, hundreds of monitors, hundreds of cd/dvd drives, etc. No, you can't choose the motherboard but the motherboard they use are hardly something to whine about. All the usual features that you'd expect with 2 standard firewire ports. You can add USB 2.0 with a PCI card and no doubt they'll be upgrading to USB 2.0 standard across their entire line of Powermacs perhaps as early as July. As far as the case, you don't have a choice, but it is one of the nicest case designs in the industry. The latch design really is incredibly elegant and it's baffling that nobody seems to want to emulate it in the PC industry. Being able to upgrade your ram in 20 seconds is almost TOO easy. There evidently was a college or a public school somewhere that had a lab with G3 or G4 Powermacs and somebody stole all the ram from all of the units in only a minute or so and walked out without anyone noticing. I don't remember where I read that, but just goes to show what a nice design the case actually is.

Overall, you can upgrade the Mac a great deal more than you are giving it credit for.

p.s. This thread was obviously started to create a flamewar. "I don't because PC's are more fun?" What kind of justification is that?

I like Macs cause they look so damn cool (at least, I like the tower cases, I could care less about the iMacs), they even (at least USED TO) have the motherboard on the fold on side panel, which is extra cool for upgrading.

sure they don't run games all that fast, I don't care, I barely run any games, cause I can't play online anyway due to my crappy 56k connection. I guess that's evidenced by the fact that i have a Duron @ 866mhz (won't hit anything higher for some reason) with a Radeon.. my RAM is now typical, even though I have the cash to go out and buy another 256 megs of DDR333 + motherboard.

it does what I need. Run Mozilla, so I can surf the net (mostly AT forums), and has office. and this is a PC! I'm going to stick with a PC only becuase of the motherboard options and the pricing argument.. that and even though I haven't used MAC OS all that much, it seems to me like it is designed without customizability in mind (though I don't know) becuase again, it has the tendency to be considered easier for newbies to understand how to get around. I'm probably wrong with that though, as I know MAC OS X (is it supposed to be 10 or X?) is built on Linux, which is a major plus to me, becuase I would love to know more about the command line (or at least have more experience with it, cause I know it can do alot of stuff).

so, I'm poor, and that's my real reason! I'd have to stick to waiting for money to accumulate, while I could still relatively keep up with the PC world by upgrading piece by piece. I guess PCs are for people who must spend their money now, and can't let it sit! hehe.

I recently bought a g3/233 off ebay but will be reselling it as soon as it gets here because I picked up a g4/400 last night in the FS/FT forum for $350 (128, 20GB, DVD). Good deal eh? 😀 😀 😀
