i dont know the exact location or the time but i am fairly confident that whenever "intelligent" people had stuff to get to the masses they would find a corner, put their soapboxes (or anything to give them some height) down, stand on them and speak/orate/debate.

Because it was considered treasonous to have your feet on the soil while criticizing the crown. By insulating oneself by standing on the box, one was allowed to say whatever one wanted.
