Who just watched the EBay spot on 60 Minutes II

They interviewed the head of Ebay, the creator of Ebay (worth about 4.5 BILLION dollars), some power sellers and users.

Interestingly enough they pretty much shyed away from the fraud (devoted about 1 minute to it) and the wierd stuff that is sold on there. The creator estimated only 30 out of every 1 million transactions are fraudulent. I think that might be kinda low.

Nah.. I don't think it's low.

You're bound to hear of all the fraud much more than all the good transactions. Think about the incredible ammount of stuff that is bought/sold on there every day....

Yeah....and eBay is getting back up there again. During the dot.com bubble it's P/E was over 11,000 at one point!   :Q

It's at 99 right now...overvalued stock.

and ebay's prolly gonna pull off another options expansion approval in the next shareholder meeting. over half their free cash flow came from options and would have shed their earnings by over half if they were required to expense options like the SEC is considering

nonetheless the new VAT tax in europe, the lost lawsuit to Mercexchange, of course eBay stock will keep going up until they run out of fools...

yep, produced almost a year ago. Would have been better to run an update on that family that was making $30,000-$40,000 per month. Wonder how many of those 3 house they still have 🙂

eBay is a valuble resource. You can find things on there that would be very difficult to locate otherwise.

Think of it as a world-wide classified ad listing.. instead of just local.

For a while the word Ebay was banned here at AT, a lot of folks used 'Egay' instead, I was stupid enough to think Egay was a competitor to Ebay 😱

wow

*Somewhat of a rant warning*

Lately I've found Ebay buyers to have become more stupid. I don't know if it's because of Ebya's success and more and more noobs are getting on, but it just seems like the average IQ of bidders has been going dramatically down. This of course is a double edged sword if you're a seller since dumb bidders will usually not be as informed and overbid on something. However, dealing with them on the after-auction completion is about as fun as getting a barium enema.

I sell some knick knacks that probably have no intrinsic value except to people who collect those type of weird things. It helps me clear out the basement and get rid of some clutter while not throwing them in to another landfill. In addition, I get $$$$, so it's a good situation for me. However, I specifcally state that I do not accpet credit card funded paypal in my auctions. Lately, every time the auction ends the winner tries to pay with a CC through paypal. I just want to scream and email them if they even bothered reading the auction before bidding. Usually, they have not, or if they have, they didn't understand what it meant and bid on it anyways. Come on folks, it's not rocket science here.

Just seems I never have that problem here on FS/FT and I guess I'm spoiled be people who know how to read and comprehend descriptions.

*Rant off*

All this being said, after much hair pulling and outright cursing, it's still a cool way to get rid of crap that you would think that nobody in their right mind would buy.

...
suck it up and pay the fees, it'll make your life less stressfull and you may get more money for your items by giving the buyer more options.

ebayers are for the most part okay characters.......but the HORROR when a newb or someone that doesn't read english very well bids on my stuff....

I think if you want to sell on Ebay, you need to suck up the Paypal costs. Man has proven more times than needed that he/she does not read or comprehend very well. 🙁

Whatever happened to billpoint, or whatever it was called. I hate using paypal as a buyer and a seller, before i just used the billpoint/bidpoint/whatever its called, where you could just take cc exchanges without going through a shady company like paypal?

I used to love ebay until it became so main stream that now when you try to find something all you end up with is auctions where someone is trying to run a b&m style store via ebay. That and all those free playstation/xbox/gamecube/flatscreen/dvdplayer/scam people - info pages. Now you might as well just go to an online store and buy, its less hassle and you pay about the same.

Yeah, this is true. I sold a BROKEN 14hr Tivo series 1 with a lifetime subscription for $100. The buyer knew this, he was going to try and fix it himself, otherwise send it out to phillips and pay the $150 for it to be repaired.

Sure, I could have had it repaired and sold it myself, but the hassel wasn't worth it to me. I figured the buyer would get it, it'd break again (phillips repairs are shoddy) and they'd want a refund.

I've also found that your items target demographic determines how difficult the auction will be. I sold some paintball stuff, had at least one person requesting a bid retraction per item. Sold a video game, had FOUR high bidders back out. Items that appeal to kids are nothing but trouble.

I'm basically a buyer and have pretty much gave up on ebay 3-4 years ago. At the time fraud was getting pretty rampart and ebay was doing absolutely nothing about it then. Now at least they have some fraud controls in place.

But now so many people have auction fever there that good deals are very few and far between. For example I recently needed a new electric toothbrush. Multiple ebay vendors were selling a particular model new (including charging base and 2-3 heads) for $10-15. One powerseller was auctioned his USED brush (handle only, lost the base and no heads) which ultimately went for $7.

Ebay is still worth it for powerseller items like inkjet cartridges, but little else.

vehicle sold on ebay every 2 seconds...:Q

digital camera sold every 90 seconds...

What do you think of this one .... not only is there no P/E, the P/S is over 460

😕

Bio stocks are more like speculations.
You are hoping that they will come up with something before they run out of money or get bought out.
But once they have the right stuff, you are usually looking at a huge huge return.

i just remember seeing a lot of pirated dvds/cd's software etc on ebay, they do sh*t about it. seriously... people practically sell mp3s on there.
