Who else here is waiting for r420 and nv40 to build a new system? Currently, I am waiting and im reallllllly anxious! I predict my dream machine will be a p4 3.2 1024mb Ram and a r420/nv40. What about u guys?

If you're waiting on a new system, wait for PCI-E as well, because the nv40 and r420 are the end of the line for the AGP interface, and the beginning of the PCI-E interface. But yes, both look VERY promising.

If you've got the itch to buy a vid card now, find something else to scratch it with. "Legend" has it that even the mainstream new gen cards will perform equal to if not better than todays current top of the line gizmos.

I'm not waiting on NV40/R420, I'm waiting on NF3-250Gb Ultra and a Socket 939 A64 that I can afford. I'll reuse my 9800 Pro in that system.

Hehe, yes I saw that you traded DaPunisher for his. The only thing I would have done differently is to take off the cooling system off of the Abit card you have (had or is it crushed under your foot) and installed it on the Ultra you just got. You would have essentially had the same card you wanted originally. But congrats on finally getting one. They are becoming almost impossible to find.

I think about next christmas will be good. The bugs will be worked out and I can get a quiet 64 solution with pci express. The real fanboys can buy first and be the beta testers on the new drivers. :beer:

Don't have to wait for them to build a good cpu/mobo combo now. Just replace the video card later with a newer one.

I agree... I am waiting for the r423 and the nv 4??? PCI-E cards before upgrading.... hopefully they come out soon?

Me too..... waiting for socket 939 and the PCI-E sockets (which the 250 isn't offering). Just wanting some kind of future proofing.

BTW, if u are a gamer, then I would suggest that you get an AMD system. They are quicker. P4 is for coding.

i'd be surprised if pci-e isn't 2-3 years away from being the "standard", or even really useful as the software will take much longer to exceed the constaints of agp. heck, Dx9 is just now STARTING to be a concern, almost 2 yrs after the first DX9 card was released.

that's a misleading statement imo. i would agree if you quantify that by stating the athlon "fx", but comparing an a64 3200+ and p4 3.2c, the athlon has but a slight advantage in gaming, and a slight to moderate disadvantage in "coding".

comparing the fx-51 to a p4ee is a no brainer however, as the fx51 is 10-15% faster in say, 3dm2003 (yes, not a quantative comaprison, but just a general example), and a helluva alot less expensive the the exremely overpriced p4ee. i have some friends that have the intel EE chip, and i can't believe they wasted that kind of money on it heh... but that's just me

overall i do think the a64's provide better price/performance, but at any rate, you can find lots of great info on this subject in the "cpu" forums...

Well..Ya waiting for both cards as I have a card right now that is basically top end.
I keep putting off building my new game machine because there isnt a game yet that has made it cry. Far Cry is the closest thing but even then it is 99% playable at 1600X1200.

Next Fall is my new target date. I am waiting on NV40 prices to fall and the A64 chips to become affordable for me

New machine will hopefully look like this

ASUS Nforce3 250
A64 3400+
2GB PC3200
NV40 or R420
2X10K raptor drives in stripe mode.

That should pull me through 2005 IMO and into 2006.

Intel is expected to push it through soon. I would expect a window where there will be crossover but sometime in early 2005 I would expect AGP to be weeded out.

I'm definatley going hold out until some AMD K8 technology becomes more mainstream and mature before I decide on my next new desktop's CPU(s) and platform. Other than that I'll probably get a next gen card once they start to come down in price a little. I figure there won't be any new games out my current rigs wont be able to handle well enough for me until T:V comes out.
