Who is the third greatest mass murderer of all time?

techs

Lifer
Figuring Hitler and Stalin are definitely one and two.

Who was number 3?

King Leopold the 2nd. King of the Belgians.

I recently was reading a book on early 20th century Europe and came across this fun fact.

http://www.moreorless.au.com/killers/leopold.html

King Léopold II of Belgium

Country: Belgium, Congo Free State (present-day Democratic Republic of Congo).

Kill tally: Five to 15 million Congolese (the indigenous inhabitants of the Congo River basin).

Also, from wiki:
Leopold is chiefly remembered as the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State, a private project undertaken by the King. He used Henry Morton Stanley to help him lay claim to the Congo, an area now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Powers at the Berlin Conference agreed to set up the Free State in 1885, on the condition that the inhabitants were to be brought into the modern world and that all nations be allowed to trade freely. From the beginning, however, Leopold essentially ignored these conditions and ran the Congo brutally, by proxy through a mercenary force, for his own personal gain. He extracted a personal fortune from the Congo, initially by the collection of ivory, and after a rise in the price of rubber in the 1890s by forcing the native population to collect sap from rubber plants. His harsh regime was directly or indirectly responsible for the death of millions of people. The Congo became one of the most infamous international scandals of the early 20th century, and Leopold was ultimately forced to relinquish control of it to the government of Belgium.

So, this guy kills 10 million people, and history forgets?

i was watching that River Monsters show a while back and he went to the Congo to catch one of the fish. he went into the history a little bit as well of Congo in general.

that is not 1 place i ever want to travel to, nor would i ever have wanted to.

I thought Genghis Khan killed more people than all of those you named...

That depends on how you look at it. Killing someone in a war is not considered murder, at least by modern definitions.
It is impossible to know how many of the supposed 40 million (a figure in wide dispute) were killed in battle, or massacres afterwards.

Does that therefore discount hitler as a murderer and reclassify the holocaust as a war crime rather than genocide? :hmm:

Gaius Julius Caesar- killed an unknown number of Gauls during the Gallic Wars, which lasted from 58bc - 51bc.

Even though the army of Julius Caesar killed hundreds of thousands, they burned crops, killed livestock, burned towns to the ground and left an entire generation to starve to death.

Maybe percentage-wise there's an argumenet, but in straight numbers, there just weren't that many Gauls in the first place.

You have your order wrong.
Stalin - 50 million
Mao - 36 million
King Leopold, II of Belgium - 15 million
Hitler - 11 million
Lenin - 3.5 million
Pol Pot - 2.3 million
