the most influential Republican, is probably someone out of public site.

the most influential living Republican, retired or not, Bush 41, George
Herbert Walker. a long & extremely influential career, starting in WW2
when he was flying about the same time his father was loaning money
to Adolf Thyssen, the primary industrialist in WW2 Germany.

Nixon had an interesting comment about Bush41 in his Watergate
memoirs. speaking of Bush41, he said, "don't worry about him. he's
in this too deep." perhaps like the 'Rosebud' scene in Citizen Kane,
we migh never know what Nixon meant by that.

the most influential non-retired - hard to say. James Baker was
retired, but he keeps popping up. same for Kissinger.

Sarah Palin will never come close to being the GOP nominee. I can guarantee you that.

Bobby Jindal is actually one of the few Republicans I'd vote for. His religious and social views are nutso, but with a Democratic Congress/Senate/SC he wouldn't be able to push any of that through. Still if the choice is Obama-Jindal, I'm going Obama.

My current comment is that will be a variety of people who will try to be the GOP Moses. Many of these will lead the GOP out of the frying pan and into the fire, and thus some may be consumed by 2010, but sooner or later a new leader will emerge. Just do not expect it to be a quick process or a process lacking some false starts.

Ron Paul?

He said "influential," not "credible." ;)

Sadly, I think Ron Paul could be the savior of the GOP, but the audience doesnt want to hear common sense - Ron Paul is full of that.

Well, as the Onion said, people enjoy having, you know, roads.

Looking at the crumbling pavement in front of my house, nobody is taking care of that now. How would Ron Paul make it worse?
