The basketball thread got me thinking. Arod gets a vote, since he's one of the few five tool players but lack of clutch hits and low avg with runners in scoring position is a knock against him. So I'd have to say Carlos Beltran is the most complete player at the moment. Vlad Guerreor is a close 2nd.

Beltran can do it all... except maybe throw a changeup, curveball, or knuckler. The guy can bat from both sides of the plate even... what more can you ask for ?

No basestealing ability :) Plus, while he's a good defender he's not as good as some of the guys I mentioned.

Not having seen a large portion of players in the past few years, I'd say that pudge rodriguez was pretty complete, or was. Rolen and Pujols both seem fairly complete to me, especially rolen. Kind of hard to be a complete player, though, unless you can pitch, catch, play O and D. Maybe dontrell willis then...

While not necessarily considered a superstar, I'd have to go with Craig Biggio. Anybody who can go from playing catcher to 2nd base to outfield and back in his career, while putting up hall-of-fame numbers and playing with an intensity that never wanes from one day to the next is in my opinion as well-rounded as you can get. He may not hit as many home runs as Pujols or steal as many bases as Beltran (though in his younger years when his knees were still in good shape he could steal with the best), draw walks like he can and play defense anywhere on the diamond wins in my book.

Just looking at the last few seasons...It would be hard to argue with Beltran, but Bobby Abreu is very close. His stats last year were amazing! 118 runs, 30 HRs, 105 RBI 40 SB .301 AVG. Thats pretty damned impressive.
Beltran's avg isn't as high, but man he sure is productive when he does hit the ball.

Ok, I'm sorry but this is the most ridiculous statement so far. Ortiz who can't steal a base if his life depended on it or who plays DH because he can't play defense? Figures for a red sox fan to say that :)

i will go with Alex Rodriguez also. here is something interesting about him in case you guys didn't know. it's what drove him to become a great baseball player:

Alex's parents got divorced when he was 8 years old, and his father left town. His mother took two jobs to support Alex, his brother Joe and his sister, Suzy. Seeing his mom struggle to work two jobs made Alex Rodriguez determined to become a professional baseball player and make a lot of money.

Wonder if he ever succeeded in that. :)

I'll give him credit for another thing... he didn't exactly marry a hot young chick either... it must've been for honest love and not money.
