Jesus, of course.

Oh, and he was NOT peaceful, for whoever compared him to Ghandi. He was controversial, to say the least. His teaching divided cultures, religions, and families.

Jesus Christ....

Yeah, Jesus go told them to go on Crusades. His teachings were not in any of that. Controversial? Sure, to some at that time. However, Ghandi's teaching of ahimsa (non violence) was rather controversial to some. Ultimately Jesus' teachings, if applied fully and correctly, will do just the opposite of what you're thinking about. Don't get me wrong, I respect and admire Ghandi greatly, he did a lot of good...

You're also forgetting that as a result of his teachings his followers were able to do a lot of good. Shall we go through this? 🙂

Hugh Hefner (1000+ of the most beautiful women on the planet!)

John Holmes (14,000+ women)

Wilt Chamberlain (21,000+ women)

Gene Simmons (3000+ women)

If you mean Jesus, then you must be referring to the crusades of course 🙂

Aristotle, no contest. Something about one person defining the fields of logic, biology, physics, metaphysics, philosophy, and theology(I may be forgetting something) in pretty much the entire occident for over a thousand years is just eminently hardcore.

in that case..

I vote NEWTON.

everything we do today in engineering, economics, ...EVERYTHING
is based off of Newton's findings.

to bad he spent the rest of his life trying to turn lead into gold or some such nonsense.

some nominations for this though.

hitler
socrates
newton
aristotle
buddha
alexander
jesus
ghangis khan
confucious (sp?)
Muhammad
constantine
charlamagne (sp?)

methinks there should be a poll on this. :x

EDIT: google turned up this list. http://www.adherents.com/adh_influ.html

I really doubt Wilt had sex with 21,000 women. That's a woman every night for 58 1/3 years. And didn't he die in his 70s?

Counting out Jesus (assuming he's the son of God as he claimed, that's kinda cheating to nominate him as the greatest human ever, isn't it?)

I think the guy who said Aristotle was on a good track. If you're really into the Biblical side of things, Noah is kinda an important guy.

Yes, and I believe he was much younger than that when he made the claim.

The caveman who was smart enough to figure out that by banging two rocks together he could start fire or maybe the guy who was smart enough to figure out that if you cook your food over that fire, you won't get food poisoning.

Ironically, I feel that the greatest man is not the greatest man for his life's achievement, but for his legacy.

Alfred Nobel.

As the inventor of dynamite, he was practically declared an evil man in an obituary written when he was mistaken for dead.
To rectify his image, in his will, he left his fortune to be used in the creation of a foundation that would award prizes for excellence in a variety of fields.

The world has thrived because of this man, and so many great men have had a readily available audience because of this foundation.

Please tell me you're not nominating Hitler as one of the greatest people to ever live? 😕
