All in one easy review using a nice, updated suite of games. Enjoy.

Don't for get the op's choice is a xfx extreme edition look at the clocks. It would be on par with a 1950 pro 256mb. It also would run cooler and use less power. Reviewers have this card clocking 600 core ,1600 mem which is incredible. I say for = performance ,lower power consumtion, less heat , 7900gs EXtreme for the win.

I didn't realize the OP wasn't interested in linux, my brain must have mashed two posts together.

In that case, the 1950pro. ATI seems to have much better minimum framerates in Oblivion when comparing nvidia 7 series to the 19xx series. I haven't every compared these two cards directly, but from memory 7 series did a little better indoors but was generally beaten pretty badly outdoors where framerates are lower. And minimum framerates are pretty important IMO since they are what jar a game out of the playable realm. Additionally, ATI's IQ is better then the 7 series.

Nvidia's 8800 parts definately corrected their previous shortcomings, but for Oblivion ATI was the way to go for last generation parts.

It look like with newer games the 1950pro is better. Stalker,Las Vegas.Oblivion but others it's real close.

The x19xx cards do have a reputation for running hot, that is true. And if a card runs to hot, it could cause crashing. If you have decent case cooling, I doubt you'll have trouble though. I had a x1900xt last year and it stayed under 70c load at stock settings with the fan turned up slightly. That was in my hot upstairs office during the summer, but my case also has pretty solid cooling so it evens out.

Others reported higher temps then I did most of the time though, so YMMV.

I have the Asus X1950Pro 256. It doesn't run hot. All my games play at full settings. I can't complain - other than it's $30 less than when I bought it.

Also, no crashing issues. My system running WinXP SP2 with all patches and latest cat drivers has been up for 19 days. I only reboot to apply MS patches.

xbitlabs measured the X1950Pro at ~64w IIRC.

btw, XFX has made the 7950GT (61w) with passive heatsinks, so the X1950Pro isn't really *that* hot, at least when compared to 8800 cards.

If you have decent case cooling you should be fine... but if you feel nervous & want to try adding cooling anyway I suggest grabbing an 80mm or 92mm fan & attaching it so it blows directly onto the card which will lower overall temps quite a bit. You can also install ATI tool or Riva-tuner & crank the fan speed up a bit manually before you start gaming to prevent any kind of heat buildup, however I suggest you try it out first before you bother with either of those steps becaise for most people they work fine.

Got rinkage? According to the list at atomicmpc, xbitlabs measured 66W for the X1950Pro and guru3d 49W for the 7950GT.

I have an EVGA 7900gs KO

Very good card overall. Overclocks like mad. I just got this thing for $161 Canadian a while back.

I would still take a 1950pro over it simply because I found ATI drivers to be better. With the EVGA I get strange 2D anomalies occasionally like video resets when browsing with Firefox while scrolling, especially if flash is embedded in the page. Tried different drivers and all show symptoms but some are better than others. Games look great. Cannot notice any difference in image quality.

Well ah heck me. I was actually considering the 7950GT thinking it required significantly less power than the X1950Pro and therefore might avoid the hassle of replacing the PSU. It is still at least physically shorter and performs better at BF2 (and thus FH2). But with the relatively high prices and tantalizing hints at RV6xx AGP cards I figgered I would wait a bit. Well, I did succumb to the promise of microcenter's $176 Sapphire 512MB but even if that pans out I don't know if I will even bother trying it. :frown:
