Which one beats the other in overall Hard-Core gaming? - and last longer too !-

I was about to go with XFX 7900GS Extreme ,But some guys told me that there is this x1950 PRO that would rip 7900GS into half when it comes to hardcore gaming specially Oblivion ;)
When I saw some reviews, I found that X1950 Pro totally stunts but what makes me really worried is these overheating issues and game crashing...plus its only 2 yrs warranty instead of 7900 GS's lifetime warranty...(mean its bad?!)

So anyone have experience in this please help me!, Does x1950PRO really overheats??

## Sapphire X1950 PRO for 135$ (the rebate will end the day after tomorrow)

I'd probably go for the X1950pro over the 7900gs. But if you really wanted to enter the intense radical world of XtremeX gaming you might want to spring for a 320MB 8800 GTS or better, or wait for the 2900XT.

I have a 7900GS, I like it a lot. I don't know if it's enough for 'hardcore' gaming. It does pretty good at 1680 x 1050 for me, it stutters in some games here and there though. I usually don't use AA either. I think the Radeon is a bit better then the 7900GS? I think that newer games are more shader heavy, so that's why it pulls ahead in some games (like Oblivion). Get an 8800 for 'hardcore' gaming. Whatever hardcore gaming is.

:)I'd say the Radeon X1950 Pro !!!512MB!!!. It almost equals one of my GeForce 7950GTs at stock. Get one and enjoy you're new gaming prowess!!! Have fun!

All in one easy review using a nice, updated suite of games. Enjoy.

I guess you didn't read the conclusion when Xbit Labs stated:-

"In most benchmarks the 8600 GTS is faster, in other, it is slower (F.E.A.R., Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Prey, Hitman) than the GeForce 7900 GS, but in the vast majority of real-world situations it lags behind the Radeon X1950 Pro. "

or

"So, those, who already own a GeForce 7900 GS or a Radeon X1950 Pro, will hardly find it useful to switch to the GeForce 8600 GTS just now: performance in current games with current drivers does not really impress and it remains to be seen whether the 8600 GTS is a good performer in DirectX 10-based games."

or

"Performance in line with GeForce 7900 GS and lower compared to Radeon X1950 Pro"

I do agree that the 8800GTS 320 is much better than all of the video cards listed! :)

are you being sarcastic? Because I was just playing Oblivion under wine in ubuntu a few days ago

If you're using linux, you pretty much have to go with nvidia. ATIs drivers and performance just aren't there on linux from everything I've seen.

I've been considering dual booting and trying things out, which kind of led me to switch from my great x1900xt to a 8800gts 640mb.

Oh, that wasn't supposed to be an ordered list :p I just put them down from memory. (8-series, 7-series, X1-series)

The real order would be 8800GTS > X1900XT > 7950GT > X1950 Pro > 7900GS >= 8600GTS

My bad, I didn't realize it might look like I had arranged them in order of performance

Pretty much a toss up. They are both good mid-range cards. The 7900GS will perform slightly better when overclocked. I'd probably go for the 7900GS, but the AIT card is very good as well.

currently there is no better card in that price range that out performs the x1950pro.

Or they use Linux.

Not sure how the whole Linux argument got thrown into this thread, as it is not generally thought of as a gaming OS. However, the fact remains that NVidia's Linux driver and OpenGL performance is leaps and bounds ahead of ATI. At least that was the case when my friends GF4 4200 was wiping the floor with my 9600XT in the Linux games we played.

I got the overclocked 7900GS a few months ago, and wish I would have researched a little more. Not to mention wait for a bit, as the prices have dropped quite dramatically lately. I didn't vote for either, because it does not matter, and I seriously hope you factor in the bias of people here when you weight this poll against actual benchmarks, etc.

(Here is the part someone calls me a fanboy)
Yep, I have been a fanboy of every company that makes 3d accelerators so far. Lets see, there was Tseng, Trident, S3, SiS, ATi, 3dFX, Nvidia. I have been a fanboy of them all.

I don't use linux so I don't care about these drivers support...All what I care about is its capability to run Heavy Games
Now I'm sure that X1950Pro Rocks, But I heard that it OVERHEATS and thats what makes me afraid to go with it.....
Have anyone experienced that?
And If I'm going with X1950Pro , Which Manufacturer should I go with?? Please throw a link !
Thanks

I would go with one of these:

Sapphire

GeCube

I wouldn't worry about it getting too hot. It may run a bit hotter than some other video cards (and cooler than others) but it will be fine as long as you don't forget to run case fans. ;)

Although the X1950 Pro does run hot, unless the fan fails or you have terrible case cooling it won't overheat & in the vast majority of benchmarks it beats the 7900GS plus offers better IQ, especially in Oblivion with AA + HDR which only Nvidia's 8 seris cards support.

As for the warranty, on the surface a lifetime warranty sounds great but the fact is that if you get 2 years with reasonable performance out of a gaming card you've done amazingly well & both these cards will likely be worth about $25 by then.

You don't require a special power supply because ATI use the same type as Nvidia, but...

If your power supply is 480 watts or higher and has a 6-Pin Power Adapter then you don't need another power supply.

If your power supply is 480 watts or higher but doesn't have a 6-Pin Power Adapter then you will need to purchase a 6-Pin Power Adapter Cable for PCI-Express Video Cards. They are fairly cheap and only cost about $8 or £2.50.

If your power supply is under 480 watts then you will need another power supply.

Most video cards which need one are supplied with a 6-Pin Power Adapter Cable for PCI-Express Video Cards but some of the cheaper brands (ie Connect3D) are too tight to supply one! :(
