Worked for the State, started as a Cleaner, was able to move up 2 different times
to a little better job. Was with the Grounds Dept for the last 15. Drove dump trucks,
front end loaders, plowed snow, mowed lawns etc.

for some reason this sounds so much better than the job in IT that i have.

it probably isnt, but right about now i would take most anything else. working till midnight does that to me :(

I have been retired for some time now. I occasionally do some work for the government.......
I travel quite a bit to the middle east, due to my being fluent in quite a few middle eastern languages plus I know how to carry myself depending on the country I am in and I can blend in real well!

Retirement over all is OK!!

Hope to do some traveling and visiting some Friends and Relatives.

Hard to believe 35+ years went by already.

Retired at 51 years old in 2008, but they paid me 85% of my wages for 2 years before that to stay home (grow into retirement) so you could say I retired at 49.

I kinda miss working a little. I was forced to retire because the place shut down. I wouldn't mind a part time die making job, but I'm not commuting to China.

Would love to retire at age 45 -

Realistically I'd like to pick up 3-5 month contract jobs for folks out on maternity leave - take a month or two off between each gig to travel and recharge the batteries and rinse repeat.

I know I can retire at age 45 but not sure I want to, but also know I don't want to wait til 60 as I have a lot of epic journeys to take and don't want to be too old to do them.

Congrats to you folks on realizing the dream of quality retirement!

I've had the polar opposite of work. Different companies and not steady work for the last 25 years = no early retirement for me. I guess I made the best of it, traveling during down times, etc.
I'll have to pay for that by soldiering on into my 60's.

Hang in there, try to find a job you enjoy. :)

Then you can send this video to your Ex Boss. ;)

I enjoy the work, it is just seasonal by nature. But hey this thread is about who has retired. A toast to all of you who got there!

I really don't see myself retire at all.

don't you think not working is so boring?

Not boring yet, I have been visiting friends, doing some house work, {Ugh}
and I have a Hobby, "Ham Radio".

I have my Extra Class Amateur Radio License, and have been talking via the airwaves to people in Far Away places. :)

Here are some of the places I have talked to in just the last week.

St. Helena
San Andres
Switzerland
Turkey
Balearic Islands
Israel
Lebanon
Poland
Brazil
Alaska
Azores
Faroe Islands
India
Panama

I knew when I started at my job in 1978 that at age 55 I would be able to retire,
I might get a part time job, but not at this time.

theres sumthin fuct up when gov workers can retire at 55 and everyone else works until 65 or beyond. someone needs to look into that issue of overcompensation of public employees

Spell Check?

I PAID into my Retirement System for Many Years.

I actually had to work at my job, I did not sit at a desk and play solitaire and read the paper.

I Paid into Social Security and Medicare since I got my first job at 17.

New NY State Employees can not retire till 63; no 35 years and out.

Most people can collect Social Security at 62 at a reduced rate. ;)

If I could retire like you've done, I would. You need to appreciate, however, that your generation is the last to do this. Your children won't be able to. The rest of us can't work for 30 (35 at the most) years, then retire for 30 more at 70%+ of our salary because of a sweet pension package.

^^

Hell, a ton of people in your own generation can't even do what you did. They'd try, then get axed after ~25 years.

My retirement plans involve moving to Canada, select countries in Europe, or some other place that isn't running itself into the ground. I will never see a fucking penny that I pay into Social Security, and I have practically zero faith in government turning that around. It will be a long time before I get to retiring age, so I may be surprised, but I doubt I will be.

I retired at 55, a dozen years ago. Got my health, and putter around doing everything from running a small saw mill to teaching college courses, all on my schedule.
