I had my last day at work Friday October 18 2013, I am on vacation till the close of the day Oct. 23rd and my First day "Officially" Retired will be the 24th of October.

I Turned 55 about 3 weeks ago.

35+ years at the same place, and since June 1980 I walked in and out of the same doors
at the same exact Building.

Who else here is already or about to be Retired??

:)

Here is one of the things I used to do at work.

Same building for 35 years, wow. You should know every crack and crevice in that building.

Wow, how does it feel? Did it feel like you got stuck there, or did it feel like no time at all? And congrats!

I'm coming up on 5 years at my current place. It's the longest I've ever been with one company; I like to change things up every so often, move to a new city, try a new job. Fortunately in the IT field it's fairly easy to hop around. But because I really like my current job, it doesn't seem like that long at all.

I've more-or-less been medically retired for 10 years in December...and I haven't hit 60...yet.

I probably have a good 40 years to go before I can retire. :p And that's if all goes well, every union contract something gets taken away, I'm sure by the time I get to retirement they'll have taken away that too. I need to come up with my own sustainable source of income by then to be on the safe side.

I still have over 30 years to go. No rush to retire though, I'll probably stay on for a few years afterwards if I can. Though a lot can change in 30 years.

I don't retire for at least 15 more years but I stopped working more than 10 years ago.

Took a look at my 401k, do some mental calculations...nope, not gonna be able to retire for a while. But I did move close to beach in FL and pretend to retire when 5pm rolls around.
I'm shooting for 65 as retirement, or death...whichever comes first. Working at the same company for 20, 30 yrs and retire with a pension probably doesn't exist anymore.
Congrats OP.

It's probably 30 years away for me, hopefully sooner.

OP, what job are you retiring from and did you enjoy it for 35 years?

Congrats! I fear the days of being able to stay in the same building for 35 years are over though. What did you do for a living if you don't mind me asking?

I'll never retire. I'll go work for a company that has their shit together, and it'll be just like retiring.

I envy you guys... I always planned on retiring at 52 but realized that for each year before 55 I lose 5% of my pension (but after 55 only gain 2% extra per year). So that with my retirement expecation goals financially, there's no way I can afford to retire before 55 and will likely have to stay until 60!

Worked for the State, started as a Cleaner, was able to move up 2 different times
to a little better job. Was with the Grounds Dept for the last 15. Drove dump trucks,
front end loaders, plowed snow, mowed lawns etc.

Most of the years it was ok, glad to be able to retire from Full time.

I offered to go back 20-30 hours per week. :)
