Who is responsible for damages in a fight?

In a hotel, if there is a fight involving 4 drunk individuals: one was trying to leave the room, and the others, concerned about him being a little too drunk, tried to stop him, which escalated to a fight. During the fight, the first individual was knocked down, damaging a door.

The hotel charged $100 for door repairs. Who should be legally responsible for the damage?

all 4 idiots... because if everyone is drunk... they're all stupid.

Whomever's name is on the hotel room owes the hotel.

The four guys each then owe that guy.

(Then again, that guy is an idiot for letting four drunk guys in his room.)

it's actually none of their faults, it's between the beer manufacturer and the maker of the door. none of these individuals can be held accountable for the poorly produced door that was due to faulty manufacturing and the beer maker, who did not take into consideration that consumption of their product may lead to an impared state.

Clearly its the government's fault for not regulating the sale of alcohol in a proper fashion. The police also failed to keep the men in line. Its all the government's fault.

So, the salient question really is: How hard did you hit the door and how badly did your head damage it? I'm guessing your head is harder than the door given you're posting after the fact.

His head hitting the floor damaged it? Did your friend go to the hospital?

As others have said, the one whose name is on the room will be the one immediately paying for the damages. I'd imagine he can then attempt to take the other individuals to small claims court, although I have absolutely no idea what he would have to go about proving in order to convince a judge to award monetary recompense for a drunken brawl.

In a perfect world, if the four people are all friends, they'd simply split the cost.

The way I see it, the people who stopped the first individual had no legal right to do so. Their concern for him being too drunk does not give them the right to stop him, as they are not qualified to make such a conclusion. It was their voluntary course of action to try to stop him.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd say every participant is equally responsible. They all went out together, got drunk together, got irate together, and got in a fight together. They should cover the damages together.

So this is just a hypothetical situation, right?

No, this actually did happen. All involved are college students, and this incident happened when we were attending a conference out of town.

I did not want to say which one of the individuals I was, as I am trying to get an unbiased opinion. Thanks.
