No, I didn't think anything of it. I went to class, picked them up, assumed she recorded the marks and put the assignments somewhere.

Had I known she was so inept I would have stapled them to her forehead and made sure she recorded the marks.

So, she's like your Mom but with power? Dude, that's like your kryptonite.

Take a screenshot of your emails and highlight the date.

Also, actually show up in person, printing off everything. Don't be a passive moron, WAIT til she is actually there in her office and approach her PHYSICALLY in person and use some skills learned as an infant known as gyrating your lower jaw in conjunction with the upper one while producing noises out of your vocal chords to resemble the speech known as the English language.

Show her everything in person, the dates, the sent dates, everything.

Raid 5 + daily backups FTW.

I'd go to the dean, and even talk to IT see if they can pull some logs or other proof that you sent it.

Also don't you have a H drive? When I was in college I always kept synced copies of my assignments on my home PC, USB stick, and the College H drive. On top of that I have a nightly backup job that backs up my entire D drive.

Wait, you have proof that you sent them - in your sent box, but you no longer have copies of the papers? Why not just print them out again & show her that you sent them on whatever date it was? That you slipped a copy under the door is based only on your word, unless you received some confirmation from her that she received them. Again, you should have a copy of that confirmation.

No offense meant, I'm sure you wouldn't be lying to us to get our sympathy, but in my experience as a teacher, I've had quite a few cases of "I put it on your desk when you weren't in the room." As unorganized as my desk may look, I don't lose things. Misplaced momentarily, but lost? Never. I don't even throw out scrap paper until after each quarter - so that I'm never in a situation wondering "well, maybe I accidentally put it in the recycle bin?" And, almost without exception, the students claiming they left (whatever it is) for me are students who have missed other assignments. In the case of major assignments like a paper, after I apologize for possibly losing it and "tell you what, go print off another copy & I'll be happy to grade it right now without any penalty for being late" - invariably, their hard drive was reformatted, or their dog chewed up the hard drive, or...

Thus, while you may be telling the truth, there are so many students who tell the same story as a lie, it's going to be hard to get your story to be believed.

He doesn't need a backup copy!

He needs a paper copy, with a mark on it, which he has lost.

If it was already marked then shouldn't the teacher have it in the records? There is usually some kind of database where marks go into, the test is not the only copy of that mark. If the teacher did not enter the grade in the db then I would definably go up to the dean as it's a teacher mistake.

Everything about this story sounds sketchy at best. While he may indeed have submitted the homework via email, it's always entirely possible that some glitch in the matrix prevented the teacher from receiving it...like a spam filter, bad email address, or...glitch in the matrix.
While every professor/teacher is different, every one I've ever had would have permitted me to resubmit the assignment if I could prove that I sent it in a timely manner to begin with.

Exchange logs could help too, but not that far after the fact. When I was in college whenever I would email an assignment I'd always check the day after to ensure the teacher got it. Waiting this long makes it hard to prove it was actually sent.

Suck it up. It's college. You're not in high school. A due date's a due date. Don't shift the blame. Sick or not, you could have gone to class and dropped it off. You do realize you're paying thousands per course, right? Don't sleep in and miss class because you have a sore throat, or you were "puking all night". You're paying for the professor's time. And if you aren't well enough to go to class, then that's the choice you make. Is it more important to stay in your room/at home all day, or take the walk/drive to class to drop off a paper?

I don't care if you're a freshman, a senior, or you're going for your masters. The real world doesn't have sick days. Toughen the fuck up.

You're the only one that is 100% responsible for your own grades. This could be a good thing, though. Getting fucked over is what 95% of the real world is about.

Tell your boss in xx years that you're not feeling well enough to finish some reports by the deadline 2 weeks in a row. Let's see how much he favors you from then on.

These are the times I'm very glad I'm a luddite and still keep a 3-ring binder of all my classwork.

Hi Pizza.

I agree with you 100% which is why I was honest when I said that of the 3 assignments she said I haven't handed in I admitted I hadn't submitted one of the assignments.

The issue is that I've moved twice, and I ran out of space in the old notebook I was using and switched to the other between now and when I picked up my assignments.

The issue is this isn't a paper, it's a homework assignment worth 3% of my overall grade between the two.

I would GLADLY resubmit my homework for evaluation, I have scanned electronic copies of them which I would happily submit to her.

Thanks for the lecture.

Firstly, I'm not American where post secondary has turned into a business. It's $350 per course per semester. Sorry I'm not getting anally raped like many of your brethren are.

I've had strep throat, and a vicious flu that has been going around. This isn't an issue of me emailing the prof saying that I'm ill and won't make it to class, rather I've provided notes to my professors saying that I'm ill and I'm on medication and that my professors have recommended I don't go to class.

Thanks for your advice chum. I'd accept responsibility if it were my fault, but in my opinion it isn't my job to make sure a professor records my marks, when I get a homework assignment back I assume that the person copied things down appropriately.

Thanks champ, normally I'm absolutely meticulous records of my notes.

Let me repeat again. I've moved twice. Switched notebooks, and I thought I stored them in a folder in my desk drawer, but half of the notes aren't there.

I'm pretty cheesed.

Sure, rub it in. I'm thinking about another master's degree - this one in physics. But, I have to weight the costs vs. the benefits. And, the costs are huge.

Damn, everyone here knows the college routine. I bet it's all talk ;) I doubt the majority of students keep all of their assignments. Since this is just homework, the prof should cut you a break, unless she has reason to believe you're making it up.

Title seems to be asking for opinions, but you already have your mind made up that it's the professor in the wrong.

I had a professor lose a homework assignment of mine. He drafted up some legal looking document that said I had turned it in and I signed it. He remove the assignment and adjusted the weight of the other homework assignments accordingly.

That seemed to be a good solution.

Actually, it DOES seem like you're getting anally raped. All because you couldn't keep a copy of a marked paper? Like others, I keep ever single marked returned paper until the end of the semester and the course final grade as been submitted properly. I'm sorry, this is the real world .. things don't work out perfectly and at this point it seems like it's your word against the teachers. You will lose that battle.

boo hoo. I never save my work and do just fine. It sounds to me like he has a new teacher afraid she has to be strict to be right or she's too lazy to regrade; Most of my professors won't even look at an assignment that is a minute late, but none of them would refuse to correct their mistake with proof of submission.

If his university has an academic ombudsman, and he actually has an email showing he sent the assignments through email on time he should be fine. Take it to the ombud if you can't work it out by talking to her.
