Who is able to run GTA3 with no slowdown in XP?

I just bought this game, did the updates, and even though it works, the slow down is really bad. The game sucks sh*t in XP, and it seems the code is f*cked up beyond all hope. And I thought the slow down in the PS2 version was bad , boy was I wrong. You would think a computer that is many MANY times faster than a PS2 would do better. Can someone give me a glimps of hope that Rackstar will fix the game?, or should I expect the worst and return it before I cant get my money back? Also, dose this game run ok in 9x OS's?

I haven't experienced any of the slowdowns I keep hearing about...couldn't tell you why, though.....maybe just got lucky?

I'm not using my 8KHA+ right now, I'm using an older KT266 board, maybe thats the reason? Heretik and rpc64, dose it run smooth as pie?, or could it run smoother? Also, are you running Intel or AMD?

I get this problem too.. and with my kind of system it's really annoying.. :(

There must be a fix for this out there... or at least lots of other people having the same problem.

It runs slow for me, but I'm currently using a Geforce2 MX:(
I'm getting a Geforce4 4400, so hopefully that will fix the problem.

One wonders if MW would run more stably and faster under Win 9X for you?

I experimented with gaming under XP and concluded 9x was superior. It does depend on the game and how you have XP tweaked out if at all.

Probably would be an increase in speed, but I remember getting crashes and lockups when I ran win 9x. Doesn't happen in XP for me, which is worth the tradeoff.

Runs great for me on my main sys (XP 1600 @ 1575, Ti200 @ Ti500, Win XP Pro) at 1024x768 mostly default settings except view distance maxed.

Amen to that, have been running the same OS load for about 7 months with just about every who's who or what's what of games in the last year still installed and running without a single problem.

ADDENDUM: Tried it on my game server (Athlon 1gig, Radeon 64mb Vivo, 384mb ram, XP Pro) had the aforementioned slowdowns really bad. Tried every trick/fix from here and Rag_3d and still no go. Maybe a secret alliance with Rockstar and Nvidia:Q

the game works Decent for me but there is a whole lot of slowdown in certain parts, especially when there's a lot of junk on screen......i just blame the coding because i know that my rig is solid.

yes the game can be annoying... without Frame Limiter and to a lesser degree Frame Sync enabling the game is virtually unplayable for me (I'm picky) It's very choppy and does amazing speed up slow down (mainly slow down) sequences. The main thing that's still annoying about the game is the accessing of the cd-rom for the audio to the game... the game has slight pauses when the cd-rom needs to spin up.

The 2 guys on this post who mentioned slowdowns have Radeon cards-perhaps its an ATI driver issue?

I thought this at first as well, but some people with GF3 and above cards have complained about the same slowdown issue. Windows 9x is clearly a better OS for gaming, being that it has a direct connection with all the system devices, while Win XP/ Win 2000 go thru software first to utilize add-in devices. I can?t remember exactly how it works though. But 9x OS is not an option due to stability issues that just aren?t worth the time and effort. Win XP has been great for gaming so far, JKII runs smooth as pie, and so dose every other title I play with any consistency. The real kicker is that Rockstar Games sold out to Sony just a while back(story at C-Net). They will not release an Xbox/GameCube version of GTA3. The least they could have done was give us a decent PC version. IMO games with slowdown and texture problems are just not enjoyable. I hear people saying it run?s fine, but you can never be sure of what their definition of ?fine? really is. Untill I see a patch, this game is in the closet for me. This really bites though, GTA3 is an awesome game and I hate to see it constricted to people with lightning fast pc?s, and crummy old PS2?s (the game dosn't even run smooth on the PS2 at times). That wasn?t a rat on PS2, I?m just pissed at Sony for being complete b*tches about ?exclusive? titles. This is the first time I feel like breaking something over such an issue...., damn Sony for being greedy!!!!!, and damn Rockstar for selling out and hiring sh*ty programers!!!!

I know sony is blocking the x-box ver but I do not think rcokstar can make an x-box ver.
well, not till they learn how.

if you cannot maintain a good frame rate on power rigs, then how will you do it on X-Box. It is always loading from the hard drive and playstation 2 does not even have one. wtf?
It was fun till the frame rate droped out and I went right back to RTCW and SOF2 multiplayer and lovin it.
I hope they come out with that multi player add on pack for RTCW soon.

XBox dose not run an OS like computers do, it's easy as pie to program for XBox. If they can make the game run on a PS2, they can make it run on an XBox even better, no if's and's or but's.

edt: off to play Jedi Knight II :p

I ran into this problem as well. But couple days later I found out *my problem* was that I had Anti Aliasing @ 4x + 9 Tap which is the max on my card. So I put it @ Quincunx. Now it runs smooth at 800x600 (it lags tad bit at 1024x768; if I disable AA, it runs perfectly fine at any resolution).

(All the other games I play like Max Payne runs no problems with Anti Aliasing@4x at 1024x768)

Overall the game runs perfectly fine for me. Once and a while i experience a slight slow up as the game checks the cdrom but it's less than a second at a time and happens rarely.

I would have to say it runs very smoothly for me. The only hiccups I encounter are when it accesses the CD-ROM for a brief second. I've had about 4-5 cop cars chasing me into a roadblock of 4-5 more cop cars with about a dozen or so cops shooting at me with pedestrians around and still no slowdowns....

Athlon XP 1800+

Sucks for me, maybe it is the Radeon.
