Tell me about your experience and how hard it was to get a position in the computer department (lack of). Also, how was the pay and hours. Thanks

Wow....ATOT is really busy compared to General Hardware. My thread just flew to the second page the instant I posted it.

i did. worst job I have ever had. i would not recommend it. i worked there for 1 reason - to get my home theatre system at a huge discount.

i was working 2 jobs at the time I had my BB job. I worked in the video department. the managers treat you like crap and want you to push the damn service plans so hard and you don't get commission. I earned $7.50/hour. When you would have to unload a truck, you would not get out of the store until around midnight, even though your schedule said 9:45. They only had like 2-3 of us working in the department and when it would get busy that was not fun because ou would have customers breathing down your neck and get all pissy at you.

the only positive side is that i saved over $1800 on my stuff. you have to work there for 30 days to obtain your discount (unless you start between thanksgiving and xmas - you get it right away).

let's just say I bought all my stuff on my 30th day and quit on my 31st day.

its a horrible job, find a job elsewhere. you will thank me later.

What kind of job are you looking for? Corporate or store? What do you mean by computer department? If you mean software engineer type of jobs, you won't find any. Best Buy's entire IT operation is outsourced to Accenture.

So you want a store job. If you want to do tech/repair, apply for GeekSquad.

I wonder how hard it is to get a job on Geeksquad. I hear they charge you up the A$$ for the service.

It all really depends on managers. I worked there for 14+months and loved about 8 of them. If you have good managers the job is easy and fun.

For Geek Squad, i would suggest applying for normal home office sales, and then show them you know ur stuff and they can transfer you.

Recently just started working in the Geek Squad. They got back to me like a week after I applied. Interview with the DCI (geek squad supervisor) and one of the store managers, then an interview with the GM the next day. Hired pretty much that day. I've been working there for almost 3 months and enjoy it. Its all going to depend on the people you work with. If your managers suck, your life is going to suck. Luckily, theres not a manager I don't like in our store. The GM is a great guy, down to earth, loves stopping and BSing with the departments when he's workin. All the guys on the squad, for the most part, are great. No real social recluses. I'm a pretty upbeat guy and love people, so I usually get along with anyone though.

I'd like to work on the geek squad but I'd rather die then wear that stupid uniform or drive that car.

Uniform isn't bad at all. No one even blinks at it really. The elderly seem to enjoy it the most though. You wouldn't be driving the bug unless they had an opening in your area. Even then someone from the store already would be more likely to get it. Its a choice to apply for the in-home (Double Agent) position, not a requirement.

Starting pay as a CIA (counter intelligence agent) was 9.60/hr. Counter Operations starts a bit lower, not sure where.

I worked there for one holiday season while in college (1996). I had to quit after the holidays for school. Having to sell a Packard Bell or Acer computer was hard. Most of the time they just advertised a nice deal on a $1000 computer and I' write a raincheck for it. I didn't push the service plans. I just mentioned them, the managers didn't like me because I didn't push the service plan.

I don't have any certs. I've just been working with computers for 10+ years as a hobbyist/gamer.

The only people that need certs, that i'm aware of, are the CIA Sr and Deputy of Counter Intelligence (GS supervisor).

To Xrax:
Service plans on laptops will easily pay for themselves. Especially if you get one of the accidental damage plans. Expensive, but over the 3 years its active you'll most likely make it back.

Also, service plans on IPODs are a must. I see SO many ipods every week for servicing. Its really out of control.
