Looking to get rid of the cheap wire racks that came with mine and put in a nicer storage system. California closets is coming on Tuesday for a quote.

I've looked at stuff from both Lowes and Home Depot and I'm looking at about $1000 to do it myself. Unbefrickinleavable how expensive that crap is.

Any tips? Places to check out? Recommendations?

Thanks!

edit:
ClosetMaid.com has a free tool where you can plug in your dimensions then add their products and view everything. You can even rotate the room around in 3D. It's pretty slick. I'm going to use the design I created to help get quotes from other custom places.

Here is what I came up with.

I have a walk in closet, that means I get to "come out of the closet" almost everyday.

Kidding aside, I hear it's terribly overpriced for custom closets. Given the basic materials involved, you could probably build it yourself.

Check out Easy Track.com or easyclosets.com. They are probably close to HD / Lowes price, but it looks like they have more options. My wife and I are looking at redoing our closet as well.

My cousin had a california closets install and absolutely loves the results. They are pricey, but the results I have seen are good.

I bought some wood and built shelves in two closets, does that count? I don't have much in the way of advice other than buy straight wood (that rules out HD), buy a level, and buy a stud finder.

Are you sure you don't want to just rent that closet out to college kids? It's bigger than many dorm rooms.

Well the price is going to depend entirely on how much of a markup on parts and labor there is as well as the quality of the wood. For 1 grand it is probably cheap wood like that used in your average bookcase. It won't stand up to time or use well.

It's 8.5 feet long on the long side, and 7 feet wide at the bottom. It's not the full 8.5x7 because of the L-shape, but it's a pretty nice sized one. Going to get some more quotes tomm.

I did this to two closets in my home last year using the Closetmaid stuff from HD and Lowes. Super, super easy to do. once you get the first piece or two together, it goes very smoothly. I overshot the amount of pieces I needed and improvised by adding a narrower unit on top of a wider one which gave me more space than I thought I would have. Screw spending thousands, I spent about 750.00 for two closets about the same size as you are doing. Also, do not underestimate the curved corner pieces. They look like they take up a lot of room, but when you get them put together and see how much stuff they hold, you will be amazed.

The Closetmaid system also give you a multitude of different configurations and looks, which makes them really useful too.

Peace
