Gigapet, if you don't mind blowing that much cash, go for it. I don't understand why everyone is giving them a hard time. They build excellent systems, have excellent support, and I think they look good. You might want to look at http://www.falcon-nw.com/ also.
 
i wish apple would make a g5 case in ATX form factor :/

on topic, i would get the alienware case only. unfortunately, they don't sell it seperately. farkers

I definately would not, as it does not meet my needs. For what I do with my desktop, hardware IDE RAID-5 is a must. I also have an affinity for SMP and overclocking.

They do seem bloated. They force you to buy a 256 MB version of a 9800 for 400 dollars which they likely got in bulk for 150 each. "Customization" on their site seems more like pick a back braking expense.
 
I don't care that much about my computer, I would pick something cheap and spend the other money on more useful items.
 
if money wasn;t a concern, stand alone parts, u could get the best stuff out there, and u know alien ware has some good stuff, but not THE TOP OF THE LINE stuff, so i would stand alone parts, i would build it my self

Forget Alienware, build your own system and put exactly what you want in it. Don't be a sucker and let someone else give you what they think you should have and make a nice profit off you for being naive.
 
Of course almost everyone here would pick the parts themselves, but I think the original poster meant you had to get it from some kind of OEM.

I'd buy from SGI 🙂
 
I build my own. I really like my Lian-Li case. It looks clean and nice, and the parts and panels fit together with precision that I've never experienced in my cheaper cases.

To go with that, I got an Antec True-Power PSU, some Panaflow L1As, and a new Seagate drive. I'm running cool and quiet now.

I didn't even consider a ready-made PC, except for Dell, but in the end, I really wanted that nice, unique looking (compared to Dell, and the all too common beige boxes) Lian-Li case, so I got it.

I would consider Dell for a ready-made PC though. They're fun to "build" online.

why would you go with dell?

Do you prefer the slower, older, no name brand parts? money isnt relavent here even if they were charging a million dollars disregard the price, if it helps pretend its stolen and there isnt exchange of money, But you still manage to get the support.

 
building a comp is fun. the only thing i'm worried about building a pc is the possibility that components may get dmaaged in the process, but if you had unlimited funds, who cares about that?! 😛

Dell uses Intel motherboards, so that's far from "no-name," and they take plenty of care to make a nice, quiet, stable system. And then you get that support. That's all.

If money was no object, and I was definitely not building my own, I'd consider all my options, but I wasn't really that close to buying a ready-made, so I didn't look too far. Remember, I really wanted the Lian-Li. 😉

Alienware uses the same parts the normal enthusiast uses... sometimes they go with intel to... probably in fear of endless tech support calls on unproven boards.
