Who Here Works On Their Own Cars?

I do a bit, sometimes it gets too complicated for me...but way to many people go to a mechanic for the simplest things and get ripped off...I hve a feeling most people here do their own work...just curious...

depends on what needs done. Main issue is lack of tools and im to cheap to buy what I need 😛

yeah that's how I feel, I am usually not hurting for money, so I might just not be able to get the motivation up to do something, but most of the time (summe when its not freezing out) i'll go do it...

For maintenance and repair, I try to do as much as I can. However, I leave the big stuff to the garage

As for aftermarket (rice 😉) stuff, I do it all my self 😀

I do, but then when one owns 5 cars... There is alway work to be done. Right now the Maxima is down. Running like sh!t.

I change the oil/oil filter, air filter and rotate the tires... so far that's all the maintenance my car has needed.

Hmmm, you need something between "do-it-all" and some maintenance, before I can take the poll. My mechanic gets the dirty jobs I don't want to do, or have the tools for. Anymore, you have to be some kind of technician to troubleshoot 'em when they have computer related trouble. I've got a VOM and cheap code scanner, and that doesn't go very far!

I have three things any car owner working on their own car should have:

1) Access to a garage
2) Acess to nearly any tool I'd ever need
3) An affordable, honest mechanic

I do the work I can manage to do myself. Bigger jobs, I'll have done by my mechanic. I needed new brake pads, $42 later at Autozone and 90 minutes of my time and it was done. Needed a new muffler and exhaust pipe, picked them up and did the job myself in a couple hours.

I also have a business account with NAPA. Their prices for me are quite a bit cheaper than the average person. I remember the muffler listed for $140 and I think I paid $110.

i do my own maintanance, brakes, suspension. sometimes its a trade off if i dont have the time, I get the maintanance items done by a shop. Also am limited by things that I can't do without a computer that the dealer uses

Um, I have trouble believing 9 people posting here so far, can rebuild an engine or tranny! If so, I sure as hell better see them offering a little more help in the YACTs!

I do all my repairs.

Who can afford a mechanic?😉 ( I used to co-own a garage with a friend)

🙂

The furthest I've gone was replacing a drive-shaft. Well, actually, I stripped a van in it's entirety, but I didn't put it back together, so I suppose that doesn't count.

I do everything I can. If I don't know how to do it, I learn 🙂. Or, at least that's the way it was when I had a garage, or at least a driveway. Now I can hardly do anything, thanks to a nosy dickhead neighbor and the fact that I only have a single parking space on the street. 🙁

The biggest job I've done to date is an engine swap in my Trans Am, when I was 19. This past summer I rebuilt the front end, completely redid the suspension, wheel bearings, and front brakes, and replaced the intake manifold gaskets. Most of that was done in a back corner of the parking lot at work on the weekends. :Q

I used to build all my cars/trucks. I was forever wrenching.
Somewhere along the way I lost the love for it, now I don't even change my own oil.
If I get in a bind I'll do my own wrenching, but it nearly kills me to do it.
My wife has wanted to build a monster truck for 10 years and it still hasn't happened.
Someday...

Yup. It's OK though, most think it's a Grand Theft Auto reference.

What mechanic has a full machine shop that they know how to use? Not many period. The mechanics I know still send heads off to the machine shop for valve jobs, etc.

As for the slush boxes, my cars have always had manual transmissions so no issues there😉 New engine? Meh, a replacement is cheaper than rebuilding.

I'm still going to bet half those 14 people would balk at replacing an oil pump, let alone rebuilding an engine! Hell, there aren't even 5 decent replies to a "My car won't start" topic!
