Why can't people just donate $1 instead of getting some stupid looking yellow rubber band?

Because people are selfish bastards who want to feel like they're getting SOMETHING for their money, even when they donate.

Lots and lots of charities give out trinkets when you donate, because it works.

In this case it's useful because wearing the band advertises the cause.

What is sad is that people will donate to cancer "research".
Cancer research and treatment is such a huge industry that the cure will never be brought to the surface anytime soon.
