Oh man I remember Fate X, Hellraiser, all that good stuff. I use to get a kick out of punting people. I was such a bastard.

I was a member of Legion, got banned from AOL 3 times but they really liked my (parents') $20+ a month so they kept letting us back in.
I once served for 36 hours straight on dialup. I was simultaneously proud and astonished that an AOL connection held that long. Luckily I had found an AOL # that nobody used and my modem was surprisingly stable.

AONiN 98 anyone?

Progs I remember:

FateX Ultra
HaVoK
Hellraiser
FateX Server 2.5 (only worked on AOL 2.5 but since it was preHTML emails, it was SO fast. extremely unstable though)
h20 toolz
nwo punter
millennium server (slow and stable)
scream/premium/soylent green/unreal/upss server (all named after 'prominent' warez groups)

ah...those were the days. AOL + IRC...

holy crap flashbacks, for a seconds I was like "zeraw?" then I remembered I used to go there all the time to get tons of crap emailed to me, lol

I remember using dos's .bas file in college to code my own proggies in VB6, then I used my mad VB6 skills to create a idle bot for AllAdvantage.com's ad bar, and had like 15 fake accounts all at variations of my address so I could totally max out revenue. man I was so 733t

half of my screen was covered with alladvantage, gotoworld, cashbar, whatever else at the time, plus an idle program :)

Ha, mine too! The only one that actually paid out was alladvantage. I think I got a check for about $40 right before they went under.

I remember being in the warez chatroom when the guides actually came in and shut it down. For the longest time AOL turned a blind eye towards this stuff and all of the sudden it was complete lockdown. I can't remember exactly what the names of the people who busted the rooms were but I think they had cat in their name or something.

The only proggie i used was AOHell. You used to be able to make up a credit card number as long as the first 4 digits were valid, but after AOL's crackdown you had to generate credit card numbers that would pass AOL's verification system - which was the only thing I used the proggie for. I must have done the AOL account setup 50 times or so.

After the first big crackdown where the shutdown warez it was always hard to find rooms. I think one of them was even called bible study, lol. The worst part was being in the middle of downloading something then having your account banned before you could get it all and then have to go through the process of finding whatever the hell room was going on at the moment and hoping someone there had the rest of the files for the program you were looking for...

Ahhh, to be 14 again...

aol chat, a place those that got kicked from IRC by real hackers could go play with scripts. I like talking to people that go on and on how they used to hack too and then talk about all these cool scripts they downloaded. Script Kiddie<>hacker.

con/con or aux/aux was hilarious. There was also a thing you could do in IM's, I forgot how it went but it was like font=00000000000000 or something like that. The only way to protect yourself from con/con was turn your sounds off. ;)

back when i first had AOL i had a macintosh.

i remember getting the warez of Soft Windows (would run Windows on your Macintosh) and it was like $300 in stores.

man i remember installing it and loading it ...

it literally took about 45 minutes to load up, and once it was loaded up, it was virtually un-functional it was so slow.

man those were the days...

Those were the good days. The scene was a force and being part of an almost exclusive group felt somewhat cool. All this before the advent of P2P.

That's because it was on a Mac where everything is slow. :p

Americans Out to Lunch ?

Always Over Loaded.

In '96 when AOL went unlimited it was hard to get a line.

Of course there were the people that called it "American Online". Same ones running to Best Buys to get their 4X Smart and Friendly CD-R drive for $299 after $200 MIR. Allow 24 weeks for delivery.

Never used AOL, compuserve, prodigy, etc. type ISP. Didn't get internet access until I got in college. Free dial-up from school. Pine email through command prompt. Oh, memories.

Thankfully, I was never unfortunate enough to use AOL.
Even if I had, I probably wouldn't admit it openly...
BBS's, FIDOnet, etc, then IRC FTW!
