I have never seperated clothes in the laundry. I just put in all in, set it on hot and wait for it be done. Never had any issues. Granted i'm a grad student so my clothes aren't expensive, but i've never ruined a shirt this way.

Is all that just a myth ?

Sometimes I do sometimes I don't depends on how lazy I am.
Doesn't matter either way.

OK, Mr Pink Shirt :)

My wife has laundry down to a science. She not only separates, but puts like fabrics and shades of color together. She also zips all zippers, uses mesh bags for bras, and turns all socks right side out.

I'm not even allowed to touch the washing machine :(

Never have and have never had a problem.

Dirty black work jeans go in with stinking socks go in with white formal shirt.

I don't have enough clothes to separate them... (Really)

Only things I separate are my white towels from everything else.

Silks and jeans all in one load! That'll get the ol wife nattering in the ear.

You can get away with stuff like that sometimes, but it can damage stuff. Throwing jeans in with lighter weight stuff like t-shirts or women's clothes (seriously, it seems like their fabric is the most fragile stuff known to man) can make them wear out faster. Rivets, zippers, and rough heavy fabric can wear lighter weight stuff.

Right here is a secret for all you new husbands. Screw this up just ONCE(ideally very early on in the relationship), and you never are expected or asked to do it again. :D

I wash colors in hot water the first time and from then on I only use cold water. They dont bleed.

I always wash whites in hot water with a little bleach. No yellowing if I'm not careless.
