For everyone who plays online, is gambling legal or illegal in your state? If it's illegal in your state, can't you get into trouble for playing online?

no its fine. The servers are not in the state so its fine.

Are you sure? Can anyone clarify? I was reading a newspaper article saying it is illegal to play for real money online. And in my state it's illegal to gamble.

actually no, I'm not sure. Although I doubt prosecution will happen due to the proliferation of players. But yes its a risk.

whats the payout structure and the house fee for the SNGs?

$62 every 4 SNGs is pretty damn good.

what type of bad habits?

Biggest one is at the play money tables, you see people play poker like its the lottery, and if they hit, you feel like you should start loosening up too. you lose focus.

you also see them living out their poker fantasies like pushing all in with 27o preflop.

Now don't get me wrong, you'll see lots of illogical crazy moves even at real money tables but at least there you have the satisfaction of knowing that your systematic and steady play is earning you real money.

I money 50% of the time, win half of those, and split 2nd/3rd about equally.

Is any of your winnings reported to the IRS (if you live in the U.S) or do you have to report that at the end of the year?

I will probably report it at the end of the year just to be on the safe side.

I think if you are winning less than 1k a year though, you can pretty much not file it.

Think of it this way. how do casinos make money? By offering games at which the house has an odds advantage.

So how do good poker players make money? By offering choices at which the good player has an odds advantage over the bad players.

Sure sometimes the bad players win. We want them to win, because if they lost everytime, they would try harder to get better or leave the game completely.

On the road to becoming good though, there is a lot of practice, reading, learning.

are there any sites that'll give you a few dollars free? like mentioned above someone got $2 to start? i just want somewhere to start.. also what's the average amount that beginners should start with? i mean is $20 enough to get used to the site and get into a few games, or will i need to initially have more like $100?

$20 is fine if you play a site that offer low blinds games.

Most sites do give you a few dollars free either by deposit bonuses (I put in 10, they give me 2 or 3) or by winning freeroll tournaments (couple hundred people enter, top 40 or 50 get some money)

note that most deposit bonuses do not activate until you've played certain number of raked hands.

Do you have a site you can recommend, that can teach a noob with basically zero knowledge about this? Or you will just ask me to google it :D

if you have zero knowledge, then just start by playing some playmoney tables at yahoo or whatever.

and also read read read.

search for hold em forums or poker forums and read the posts on there.

I've already said that paradise and pokerstars has 1c/2c tables (be aware this is no limit).

For deposit bonuses, you kind of have to search around a bit. They aren't always around for every site but every month or so, a new one pops up.

once you've gotten pretty good, you can move to partypoker, where more crappy players play.

The only reason I don't recommend party to new player is that the minimum limits at party are pretty high.

Patience is what kills me in texas holdem. You gotta be super patient and persevere. Don't come out with crappy cards. If your hand doesn't get better on the flop, get goin. Watch the players. Bluff and lose when your luck is strong. Don't be afraid to fold when you know you're gonna lose.
It's an easy game where you're really your own worst enemy.

edit: up $108 now.
edit: quiting tonight up $88.

1. On avg about 50-100 a week.

2. I would say 6-10 hours a week.

3. Limit tournaments and no limit single table tournaments.

4. Pacific Poker for normal cash games and Party Poker for tournament action.

5. $1/$2 or $2/$4 for cash gams. I'll buy into $10-20 dollar tournament games.

so if someone plays the 50/5 buy in (playmoney only) tournaments at partypoker and gets into the money (final 3) about 1/3 of the time, how good is that on a scale of 1 to 10?

NL $25, NL $50, or NL $100 - depends on how much I'm willing to lose (and win)
I usually double up and then leave - I've lost only a few times but the last say, 15 times I've played, I've doubled up

fake money games are not indicative of how good you are.

once you know the rules, read up on strategy and move to real money.

its play money. doesn't count. You'll see 7 people push all in before the 5th hand alot of times. and if you are lucky enough to win that huge luckfest then you end up winning first. Or you fold and go on to win 3rd or 2nd.

even $5/1 real money tourneys are loose as hell. $5/1 sngs on party are the worst games for you money in my opinion. complete crapshoot.
