Who here regularly make $$ by playing Hold'em online?

1. How much do you make per week?
2. How many hours do you play a week?
3. What kind of Hold'em do you play? (NL, R/F, Limit)
4. Where do you play and why?
5. How big do you play? (A friend of mine makes a good $400 a week playing .50c/$1 tables)

This is not a place to brag as people psychologically tend to inflate how much they make, be honest!

Care to share your experiences?

It's not much, but I make about $20 a week. I play at .5/1 or 1/2 Hold'em tables at Paradise Poker. I play there because I got $2.00 starter money for free. I have yet to put in a single cent of my own money. I figure I put about four hours into it per week, just for fun.

I'll start with myself:

1. None, I'm down $120 (Just jumped into this blindly about a week ago)
2. Blew the above amount in 5 hours
3. NL. I've been given advices that I should play Limit games because this further reduces variance.
4. Pokerroom.com, I like the interface than partypoker.com
5. .25/.50

I suck. I hope to improve. I'm not here to play for fun online. I do that aplenty with my own friends. I need a good source of income while I'm a full time student and I hope to achieve a systematic approach to play properly in order to make profit.

[edit]
That being said, anyone willing to coach me thoroughly?

I am up about $1000 since I started.

you really shouldn't count your winnings by weekly and hours per week since some people multitable and play at different limits.

an easy way to do it is count it by BB (big bets if you are playing limit, big blinds if you are playing no limit)
/100 hands.

I typically make $70 to $80 a week 3 or 4 tabling no limit .25/.50

I play about 5 to 6 hours a week.

also, you should discount information from a sample size of less than 10k hands.

I highly suspect your friend can consistently win $400 a week just from .50/1.00 limit tables but maybe he's playing a lot and multitabling 6+ tables.

If you are good, NL is less variance than limit.

single hand variance might be higher in NL but you don't have month long streaks that kill you like you do in limit.

He plays very systematically i.e. his play is almost automated responses. He just folds if he's not Jx+ and so on and so on. I've been meaning to ask him to teach me but haven't had the time.

limit is a very systematic game.

which is why you can play 8 tables of limit simultanously and you can write a bot to play limit but you can't really do so for NL or at least it takes much more resources to do so.

even if he is a very good limit player, $400 a week seems a bit high for those limits unless if hes putting in a ton of hours and multitabling a lot.

Where do you learn to play poker? I'm completely clueless to this game.
Any place to play for fun (no money required) online?

worst idea ever.

you will never learn anything.

go to pokerstars or paradise.

buy in for $20.

play the 1c/2c no limit tables until you get good enough to move up in limits.

I don't want to spend any money when I don't even know the rule of the game.

Sorry, I wasn't aware of how much of the game you knew.

well, join any site where you like the avatar/site layout. If you want the quick and easy way, you can play on yahoo.

learn the rules there, and then quickly move to real money.

Play money teaches a lot of bad habits.

For everyone who plays online, is gambling legal or illegal in your state? If it's illegal in your state, can't you get into trouble for playing online?

in limit, 5/10 refers to the bet size.

so big blind is 5 dollars , bet on flop is 5 dollars, bet on turn/river is 10 dollars.

in no limit. 5/10 typically refer to the blind sizes since betting is not capped, the concept of big bet/small bet does not exist.

Thus 5 dollar small blind, 10 dollar big blind.

on party though, all the no limit games are capped buy in games labeled 25NL, 50NL, 100NL, 200NL.

thats the max you can buy in for when you first join the table.

blinds for 25NL is .25/.50.

so you start with 50 BB stack.

a smaller stack than other sites which more often offer 100BB stacks.

Are you sure? Can anyone clarify? I was reading a newspaper article saying it is illegal to play for real money online. And in my state it's illegal to gamble.
