Who here misses Half-Life

I'm sorry, but City 17, Combine, Alex, etc., it just doesn't appeal the same way MISSLE SILOS did, and nuclear reactors, and Black Mesa, and all that stuff. I know HL2 was a fantastic game but it doesn't produce the same kind of world and excitement that the original did.

Anyone else agree?

I have missed it, but then I got on Steam, donwloaded it, maxed all the graphic settings both in Nvidia CP and in-game, and walked around the first level. Its just too old to play anymore...

Yes, I agree, it's tough to replay now. I miss the days when it was new and I mapped for it. 🙁

Why the heck didnt anyone like xen?? Wtf was wrong with it? I played half life about 4 years after everyone else, i liked all of it, xen included. I liked the interesting things there, those little moving plants, those big ones that attacked, the creatures like gargauntua's, yea yea they were in black mesa, but it was fun to encounter them in xen too.

Did people not like it because they kept dying from falling?? Or from falling off the edge of the map?? Is it just the whole... alien.. thing they didnt like?

There was only one bit i didnt like in the whole half life 1 series, and that was in opposing force where after sealing shut two doors that spawn infinite species x things, you have to run around in these underground tunnels with these huge fat 1 hit killers bounding around after you. I hated it when your flashlight ran out, and then you could hear the thing bounding towards your about to be toasted ass. Not good.

Anyways overall, nah i dont miss it. It was good, but IMO half life 2 was a worthy successor.

I still play some of those add-ons. Some are really good. The games is dated but as far as I'm concerned, there was never another game tha impressed me as much.
Episode one sucks big time .....;(

I went to replay it recently, thinking that I wouldn't be so quick to judge by the graphics. I was wrong... I guess the graphics help me enjoy the game more and I definately don't enjoy hl1 like I used to.

Graphics don't make the game, but the newer graphics of today make it harder to play older games. Instead of focusing on the great gameplay, you can't help but notice what an eyesore the older game has become. The same thing happens to all games I am sure. Half-Life 1 was especially great because of the many hours of gaming that took play afterwards. TFC, CS, DoD, and others all came from HL1. The same thing is happening with HL2 and the Source engine. The single player for HL2 was great (although it has NOTHING to do with HL1's general idea and could technically be called something other than Half-Life), but the real life is the many years of CSS, DODS, etc.

I don't.

I played the hell out of the original CS, TFC, deathmatch, some DoD, as well as other HL mods. But no I never found the single player to be all that. It got down-right stupid with that Xen crap. I never bothered beating it. The start was very cool and it was great for a while (maybe about 1/2 through the game) but I don't see why everyone is so obsessed with it now. That and I only had a P166 + Vooodoo Banshee when I first got HL, so I didn't get into it very much till I got an upgrade. Still though, Quake was out in 1996, so I was still playing Team Fortress and other sweet mods when HL was out. Now that game is what pretty much started online gaming as we know it now.

HL2 is much better in almost every aspect. I like the story and the immersion much more than HL1.

HL1 provided an experience for me that no game has ever matched. Just with the huge experiment gone wrong, all contained within Black Mesa, fighting your way to get to the top, seeing and experiencing parts of the building that you didn't know existed. It's just a lot different when the developers make the player intimate with one area of the world, instead of sending you all over the place like every game does today. It makes it more personal, more real, and scarier, I think.

Even if I can't fully explain it to everybody, I just know that when I played HL1 (maybe it was only because I was so young at the time), I felt more immersed and excited than any game has done for me since then. Back when I didn't even know if there was GOING to be an HL2 at all, I dreamed of it one day coming out and it just being like more Half-Life 1, only better looking. Unfortunately, it ended up being a completely different game that doesn't even seem like Half-Life.

I'm seriously waiting for that Black Mesa mod.

no . . . 1/3rd of HL [Xen] plainly sucked . . . it was a just 'taked on' platformish jumping fest that changed *everything* from a brilliant first 2/3rds.

i don't miss HL a bit and will never REplay it.

i want something 'new' and innovative . . . 😛

I don't think it's really fair to call it a jumping fest. The first part is right after you get your long jump module. After that first level there is hardly any from there on. And the way that they did it - by keeping you on earth for most of the game and then all of a sudden tossing you in the alien world - made it MUCH cooler than just staritng off in a place like that. You got so used to normal surroundings and then they throw you in there. Kind of helps make you feel weirded out - ya know, like how'd you really feel if that actually happened to you. 😛

yeah, it was back in my reformatting stage, i would forget to back the saved game files up, so i would always start from the beginning. 😛 still enjoyed it though

Anyone know when and if the Black Mesa Source mod is coming out? For anyone that doesn't know, its HL1 but with the HL2 engine.

I missed it cuz I have not had much thought about half life 1 when it comes out and very popular. Now I own half life 2 but still not finish it yet.
