I rent.. and i like it.

$885 a month for 1200 SqFt.
Washer/Dryer in the apt.
Gas/Electric is about $100/month
Water is $25/month
Cable/Internet/Phone is $110/month

I don't have to worry about mowing lawns
I don't have to worry about shoveling snow or clearing walkways
I don't have to worry about plowing either.
Maintenance replaces all our Lightbulbs free too.

Parking for me isn't bad.. i work 9pm to 6am.. when i come home, people are leaving for work.. so plenty of prime parking.

I've lived in apartments for the past 3 years, and a different one each year. Been in the same complex though as it's really convenient for school and I sort of know the landlord now. That's advantageous as I can get repairs done without a hassle. Overall it's ok. I pay way too much for how much space I am in, but oh well there aren't many other choices. Especially not within walking distance to school. It's much better if you have a roommate though, singles are just too pricey. The building is built ok, but not great. There is nothing but a sheet rock wall between me and my neighbor. Thankfully there is a staircase to the upstairs between me and her, so I can only hear her in the bathroom. Upstairs I can hear her walking around and water usage, but that's it. Pretty much everyone in the complex goes to school here so I never have to deal with families, and thankfully no one is overly loud. At least my neighbors are pretty quiet.

You tend to get use to it after awhile. I kind of dislike my apartment in that I have to be reasonably quiet so as not to bug my neighbors. If houses weren't 300 or more per month to rent I'd probably be in one of those right now.

Love it.
It is one bedroom with a large living room with sliding glass doors. The view is of a forest full of trees and lots of birds. Could not ask for a better view.
Almost all the neighbors are senior citizens in the 70+ age range , some are younger but people like me, almost 40 are the minority. During the day there is the usual sounds of my neighbors tv set I can hear sometimes if I have nothing turned on. He is a bit deaf so it can be loud, but nothing like bass pounding sounds you could hear when I lived other places. Everyone basically knows each other and sits outside during the day saying hi or just talking. After about 10 pm most people here go to bed and it becomes so quiet you can hear your own footsteps.

I have directv installed (apartments have to allow it as long as you do not attach to the roof or place it in a public area they have to allow it by FCC rules) . The management supplies the appliances like fridge and stove and they come around once a month and replace the air filters in the AC and spray the apartment for pest. The one time something broke, a ceiling fan switch they came that day and replaced it . They keep the grass cut and bushes trimmed. Also blow leaves and dirt off the parking lot. Really good place to live, there is a long waiting list to get in here. Been living here 3 years now and love it.

I think the thing that matters most with apartment living is when you live around people that have consideration for each other. Like I never use surround sound at night because I know it would disturb my neighbors. Though you don't get to pick your neighbors and there always seems to be one bad one in the bunch that doesn't give a damn what other people have to put up with. Luckily we got rid of that guy here.

The one I live in now is alright, I can see the ocean and walk to beach and get public transport anywhere. My only qualms are that my place isn't very sound proof and my bedroom shares a wall with the bathroom so I hear EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING! Also there is no patio or balcony, so if I want to enjoy the outdoors I actually have to leave my house.

I'm about to move into the city though into another apartment. You can never tell what living in a apartment is going to be like until you actually do, so I guess we will see.

Renting sucks. Not only is it a monumental waste of money, if you get stuck next to douchebags you're miserable till either you or them goes.

Renting is all about your neighbors. Either of a specific group that rolls 10 deep in 1 apt constantly yelling at each other in another language or a quiet couple. Roll the dice.

I live in a townhouse now and looking to move due to neighbor issues. I guess I'm going to hold off & save money for a single house. It seems like it's a hit or miss with apartment, if you get considerate neighbors, you're good.

I live in an apartment amongst many other apartments. This is so that I can use my $6000 telescope to spy on people late in the night. I keep detailed logs of each of my subjects. This is my life.

The main problem is neighbors with shared walls. No idea why anyone buys a condo. Its like all the hassles and disadvantages of renting an apartment and owning a house all rolled into one.

but you've got the option to move.

a couple years ago, my parents neighbors turned into real douchebags... and they're stuck having to deal with them because of the housing market + general pain in the ass-ness of having to sell a house.

depending on where you live, buying a house may never make financial sense, between mortgage, property taxes, and upkeep expenses.
