Anyone else really like the Starkist flavored tuna pouches? I hate the price premium over canned tuna, but the taste and convenience make it worth it to me.

When I was big into weight lifting, the tuna in sunflower oil version of these made great snacks. Tons of protein and good calories and very tasty. Unfortunately, they stopped stocking them at my grocery store.

I ate canned tuna in water while growing up, then later the tuna in water pouches.

So finally like 6-8 months ago, I had to pick up a pouch of tuna in oil. I found it's a little bit better tasting so I generally buy it in oil although I still buy it in water if that's all they have or is on sale.

Sure I always mix it with mayo (made from more oil) for sandwhiches, but oh well. To balance out all this retarded "salt free fat free carb free" bullshit, I'll eat eat tuna in oil damnit.

I've always purchased tuna in water. Maybe I'll buy a can of tuna in oil to see how it taste.

Oh, and tuna + mayo + bread = classic combo.

Get the pouches dude. I don't buy the canned tuna anymore.

Don't you guys use onion in your tuna sandwhiches? I chop up a good amount of red onion to mix with the pouch of tuna in oil, add mayo (not some stupid miracle whip), then spread on some honey wheat bread and add salt and pepper.

Pouches are more expensive per oz I believe :(

And yes, I usually do put red onion in my tuna salad. Good stuff

I drain both types of tuna and the one packed in oil has a better taste. Water seems to absorb the flavor and oil to seal it in.

It has to do with the hydrophobic/non polar aspect of the flavor molecules. Since oil is non polar, it attracts and basically makes the flavor molecules stick to the oil. Hence, why oily food tastes so damn good.

Since water is polar, it repels the flavor molecules, which explains why there is less flavor when compared to tuna in oil.

I remember my mom switching to tuna in water in like the 70s (might have been the 60s) and at the time I thought it didn't taste as good. I haven't had any in oil that I know of since. I wonder what I would think now if I were to try some.

Tastes disgusting in water!

"I was shunned from the age of four until my sixth birthday for not saving the excess oil from a can of tuna."

Cause I sure as hell don't. And then of course some asshat decides to throw a few cans of it back on the shelf on the tuna packed in water stock... and then it's pure fail on all parts. :\

Now if we're talking about tuna and massage oil... that's another story all together. :sneaky:
I feel ya, happened to me before hated it, pisses me off almost as much as doing an oil change and 3 bottles in I find a 10W mixed in with my 5W's :(
